Gen5 Question on Polish and Wax

Please dont bash/flame me on this one. bought new wheels in June, live in NYC, winter is around the corner. do i need to put some polish and wax on prior to winter setting in order to protect the clearcoat paint? should you polish and wax a new car? finally, will polish and wax help the paint of the new ride during its first winter? thanks for input mates.

You probably don't have to polish brand new paint. But it would be a good idea to clean it (w/Clay bar) and give it a few coats of wax.

I suggest you get something to protect the hood . Those salt spreaders truck in NY and NJ cause some major chips on the hood of my 05. Wax will only help to a certain extent.

Waxing is old, and a waste of time. 3+ coats last 1month max in salty winters. Go with polymer based sealants on the market ... last 4-6months, enough to get you through the winter.

You have 3 good options :
Zaino www.zaino.com
Klasse www.properautocare.com
Menzerna FMJ (full metal Jacket) www.properautocare.com

These options are very popular with german car owners. Of course, they require the typical : polishing/claybarring before application.

Hawkeye, is it safe to claybar a new car with clearcoat? i know polish may harm a new car's finish if too abbrasive. waxing does not harm to a new car's paint. i have never used claybar before.

Yeah. A new car's paint is not exactly like fresh from the booth paint. It has been baked and has been sitting on trucks and on lots for at least a few weeks.

Polishing new paint is not bad at all on new paint, depending on the abbrasive level of the polishes. If you are into detailing, typically there are 3 levels to a line of polishes :

1. Cutter
2. Medium/Light swirl remover
3. Light swirl remover/finisher

Cutters are for incredibly messed up old paint, rarely use it if you take care of the paint.

Typically you start with 2 if you see noticiable swirls, 3 if it's a pretty new car.
I do 2, 3 on my 2001 bmw in the spring, and just 3 in the fall. No matter how careful you are, you will get swirls. German clear coats are softer, due to higher speeds in europe so they dont chip, but very soft so swirls appear easier. Japanese clear coats/paints are stiff/less swirls, but chip easier.

My bmw swirls up much easier then my 2003 Accord, but my 2003 Accord has massive chips up front. All give or take here and there for clear coat technology.

Sure, if you want that extra bling... but it wont last long during winters. People do it during summers... cars look like crap in winter anyways, too much salt.

no offense but i would not leave your new rims on for winter in NYC.
winter weather + road salt owns rims, if you gotta leave em on make sure you can pull your car in a garage or someplace warm and clean/wipe the rims off a lot.

hmmm. speaking of black cars..........i have one, and boy it's hard to keep it clean. i lost all of my car cleaning products so i'm starting fresh!

so far i've got chamois and some type of wash. what do you guys recommend for waxing/polishing? the only stuff i've used is the three step deep crystal burgandy thing from meguiar's.......... is there anything better i can find at the local wal-mart/auto zone?
