2nd Generation Gas mileage and acetone...

Ok folks,
Gas mileage is a big issue these days. My 4 cylinder automatic '94 Corolla was getting 33 mpg. I sold it and got the V6 '91 Camry. It is getting 25/26 mpg combined highway and around town mileage. As most of you may know, there has been a lot of internet chatter about adding 2 to 3 ounces of acetone per 10 gallons of gas to increase mileage, without any harm being done to your engine. Well, I added about 3 ounces to my tank when I filled it yesterday. So far: When I fill up, my gas hand goes about 1/8 of an inch past full. Then, at around 33 to 35 miles, the needle has come down to the full mark. Since the addition of the acetone, I went 80 miles before the needle came down to the full mark!!! I am tentatively projecting that I will go from 320 miles per tank, to 380 to 400 miles per tank!! I could be wrong as this is in the early stages, but it sure looks like that now. Has anyone else here tried the acetone experiement. I have lots of info on it here is a very informative link. Happy motoring!!

The stuff works. Ive been doing it for about a month and I swear by it. 3.2 oz per 10 gallons. A gallon of acetone at ACE hardware is about $10. You will be amazed.

the best I've gotten to a tank was 805km

'95 DX Sedan 5S-FE 5pd

No Acetone. Just light foot

I used to use Acetone, but it was too much of a hassle buying/mixing.. The ends don't justify the means.

2nd Generation wow!!

The end results don't justify the means? Wow, how much trouble is it to buy and pour acetone into a premeasured glass tube and pour it into the tank? 50 or 60 EXTRA miles per tank certainly justifies it's use for me! I guess some folks just have more money than they have time for such an easy task.. But then, you can't have ALL that much money, or you wouldn't be driving a Toyota!!

first things, what is acetone? I would like to know its compound before I go pouring it into my gas tank.Second just want to mention that if you REALLY think about it, the increase in gas prices isent all so bad. You used to be able to fill up for around 28$ right? well now it costs around 38$ maybe 40$. you fill up 5 times a month, thats 10$ extra five times a month. If you cant afford an extra 50$ a month you need to go buy yourself a geo metro and stop with any mods to your car....not to say any of you guys but this goes out to all the whiney people who wont shut up about gas prices. Third, I have a four banger 95 cam and get around 30 MPG and my 993.2TL VTEC gets closer to 35 MPG....it really makes me mad when my TL gets a whole extra 2 cylinders and 150+ HP more than my car...yet gets better gas milage.

2nd Generation yet another man with money :-)

I don't know about you brother, but $50 a month is a heap of change to me!! That would pay about half my monthly Bullmastiff dog food bill, or half of the $100 per month Harley Sportster payment, or 10 $5 meals, or admission to 4 blues shows at the Double Door Inn in Charlotte, etc etc... Times is hard here in one of the poorest counties in SC!! (Notice again, I'm driving a Gen 2 vehicle) LOL...

Btw

BTW... I don't whine about gas prices, and will drive if it goes to $10 per gallon. Lets just say I am somewhat conservative, and would rather put my money in other places than to be lining the rich oil tycoon's greedy pockets... Gougers, yes they are...

I wouldn't dump acetone in the gas tank. Acetone eats rubber (i.e. seals) over time. This includes injector seals. That stuff is more potent than gasoline. I wouldn't do it because it may cause problems with seals and gaskets and stuff. Why don't they put acetone in the gas before putting into the barrells because it is so cheap? There is a reason.

thats nonsence, acetone does desolve *cheap plastics* yes, but
this has been tested on cars over a longer period, and the only side
effects is, Better milage, cleaner emisions, better power, keeps
the interrior of the engine clean, rubber seals get a tad bigger but they
do not "melt" or erode away, but it seems that carby engines get
the most improvment, as the gas has a long way to travel before
it reaches the combustion chamber, and the acetone keeps
the gas from sticking to the inner walls , and makes the fuel
atomize better.

Yup, acetone will eat all rubber components in your fuel system. I would never use it long term IMO.

Fuel injector cleaner also creates a similar effect but without the harmful chemicals. Canadian Tire actually has injector cleaner that is good up to 5 tanks for $5 when they are on sale. I do get another 60-70 km per tank when using the injector cleaner, and it costs about $1.25 for each treatment.

I am enjoying all these different opinions.. That's why I started the thread. Personally, I don't think 3 ozs. of acetone per 10 gallons of gas would be potent enough to eat up any rubber seals/components.. And also, as previously stated by Zandro, there have been long term tests that have proved rubber deterioration to be insignificant. Believe me, I have been reading about this for about six months, and would never dump anything in my tank without much study. stir-fry-boy: The reason gas mileage additives are not added to gas is simply the greed of the oil companies NOT wanting you to get good mileage... I will continue to use it at least 3 out of four tank fulls of gas. If I blow my sh*t up, it ain't but $1600 down the drain, and I'll ride my Harley...
