I have 4 studded snow tires mounted on steel wheels.
When it's about to snow, I simply remove the alloy wheels w/regular tires and put them on. Then after the storm passes, I just remove them and put the regular tires/wheels on.
Since it doesn't snow much in Western Washington, I put on maybe 500-700 miles on these tires every year.
For me this work fine, but since you will be doing some dedicated highway driving, I would look into a set of studless snow tires. Bridgestone Blizzaks come to mind, but there are many other fine snow tires from other manufacturers.
