Unhappy Calif. Camry timing

I have a 1994 Camry 5SFE. Obviously its a reliable gutless wonder. I've heard that the California model was 'detuned' via a lazy advance curve. I know the two distributors are different. How can I fix it (I live in Nebraska now).?? Change the distributor for a non-cali. model?? How else?? A 'normal' advance curve would seem to me to be an easy 10-15 hp gain (this thing is a turd), any advice would really help...

Thanks in advance,

Brad

All of the timing advance and things of that nature are controlled by the ECU. SO changing out the distributor will not really do you much good.

Is it possible to 're-program' my ECU as far as timing goes?? Can I swap out the ECU??

I am not sure about that but there are other things that go along withthe California emissions. I dont think jsut swapping out the ECU will be the cure for your problems. waht is the actula difference in HP from ad Cali car to a Fed car. I thought is was only a couple. I would think you could do some intake and exhaust mods to maybe gain a little bit back. GO through and do a good tune up on it if you havent and see what you can get out of those.
