Hi everyone, I own a gen 4 (98) and am having a little bit of trouble with something.
Got new 6x9s from Kenwood Excelon... so I tried to install them. Little did I know, that rear deck won't come out!
I guess I'm a pretty big newb since i can't even figure out how to take that rear package shelf apart.
Though I haven't broken anything... yet. It feels as if the next move i make could result in a cataclysm of broken parts.
Thus I've decided to come seeking the expert advice of fellow camry owners. I'd appreciate any tips or instructions as to removing that deck so I can install my new speakers.
Wow, in the span of 1 minute, I just responded to someone with problems in his rear deck speakers also, on another forum though. But anyway, here it is.
1) Remove rear bench seat by lifting up. 2) Remove rear side armrests by taking 14mm (or 12mm) bolts out, and lift up. 3) Fold rear seats down. 4) Remove the C-pillar panels, but take the black plastic push-in clips out. 5) Remove third-brake light cover by going in the trunk and releasing 2 tabs; disconnect light harness. 6) Flex the rear deck up and out. Voila, speakers are exposed.
Hey Cmeister, that's pretty hilarious. I didn't realize by your Bankruptcy name. Hopefully, you got the rear deck out.
Jaycamry, just lift the rear bench seat up by the front, there are two clips. You need a good yank to get them loose, but after a few times, it isn't that bad anymore.
you'll need to be a member of Imagestation in order to view them. registration is free. in my instructions i cut the stock hole bigger in order for my new speakers to fit. another option instead of cutting is to create your own custom speaker mounts that utilize the stock screw holes.
rayray, just in case you need to get back there again.... you dont need to take out the back seat. Ive been back to those 6x9s maybe 7 times... you can take them out, or exchange them with out taking out the seat.

would the install be similar for a Gen 2? i'm thinking of upgrading my Kenwood 6". when i put them in i just lifted up the middle part of the parcel tray but it was still connected somewhere but luckily the new speakers dropped right in. but if i want to put in 6x9's it'll need some modification so i'll have to take the whole thing off. any other Gen 2 owners performed the whole operation including adding 6x9's etc?

hmmm... i don't know how you would be able to get at the screws for the parcel tray in order to lift it out without pulling off the backseats first. but if you can do it... more power to ya.
me?... i'd rather not risk broken parts. bin der, dun dat.
Jason, you noted that you put in some 6x9 infinity's. I was thinking about doing the same thing with some 3-way infinity kappas, did you have to cut to get them to fit in, I know that infinitys are usually pretty small, so I was wondering if they fit in without any modding. I have a gen 4, but I assume it is the same size.

Get 2-way 6x9's in the back and 3-way 6.5s in the front...if u get 3-way 6x9s all of your music will be coming from the back and you wont be able to here much coming from the front...i would suggest if you are going to get new front speakers also get a componet set...they sound great
