2nd Generation overdrive light blinks occasionally

My V6 '91 Camry has an overdrive button on the shifter. Naturally, living in a flat section of the country, and not doing any towing with it, I run it in overdrive all the time. When it is NOT in overdrive, an indicator comes on, and STAYS on, on the dash saying "overdrive off". This is normal. The weird thing is: Sometimes, the "overdrive off" indicator flashes INTERMITTENTLY on the dash when the overdrive is ON. Most times it doesn't, and stays off with the overdrive on. The transmission does not shift in or out of overdrive while this flashing is going on, but works normally. I was just wondering if this flashing was some sort of indicator that I might need to be aware of, like the tranny fluid needing changing or something. I did not get a service manual with this car, so there are things I don't know about it... Any ideas folks?

Not sure but it might be that you have a loose wire/false contact,

I'll check that. With my rear valvecover gasket leaking a tiny bit, and my powersteering fluid going somewhere, the fluids could be fouling the sensor connector at the tranny. Good idea Dj-torn. When I get time, I am going to put it on the rack and do a thorough inspection of it.. Thanks..

yeah sounds like it may be a connection oose or something like that. Unfortunately the owners manual is jsut going to tell you to taek to the dealer to have it checked out. You may try getting codes for it jsut to make sure there isnt anything going on with it. I think you can pull trans codes the same as you do engine codes on those by jumping the diagnostic connector under thehood. I think that is right it has been a long tiem since I did it and cant remember for sure. What is it TE1 to E1 or something like that.

I had this problem on my Gen 2 V6 and it ppiiiissssssss*** me off hahaa. Couldn't figure it out. Ended up being a short in the indication circuit (the circuit board that shows the gear and the o/d etc) and also a faulty no.1 solenoid.

The O/D indicator flashes when there is a problem with the auto gearbox...just it doesn't tell you WHAT is wrong

if you take it to the dealer theyll prolly charge you an obscured amount of money when its prolly a loose wire or a false contact.
