4th Generation Ticking noise from brake?

hey... for a while now the front right wheel has been making a ticking/scraping noise... its not a harsh scraping noise.. its just a little sound almost like the brake pad rubs the rotor when not braking... but braking does not effect the sound.. so its not the pad... ive looked all over and cant seem to find the source of the sound but it really makes the car sound like a piece... it worsens when turning right... and makes less noise when turning left... has anyone had a problem like this before? and i was wondering if so... if you ever found out/solved the problem? its a 98 camry ce with the I4. thanks alot, any help would be appreciated

sounds like the cv bearings are wearing.

check unde rthe car and if the rubber boots are split (you can see oil on them) then its a good chance that you need some new cv joints (as bearings dont come on their own

they usually wear when the boots split and let dust in with the mix and rub on the metal bearings (usually hte oil lets the bearings stay off the cv but dust will get in and scrape)

I have a similar problem, it's sort of a popping/ticking noise when I'm braking and turning. Also it will do it in reverse, even if I'm not turning. It's worth mentioning that my steering is really loose, and I have a wheel shimmy at high speeds. It shimmies around 35mph too, depending on road conditions. If it is the CV joints, how much do those cost to replace?

hmmm... i just thought of something... the driveshaft was replaced less than a month ago and they must have replaced the cv joint if thats part of it... it was making the noise before and after having it replaced... its not so much of a grinding sound as it is like a high pitched sound like when you lightly break and it makes a sound.. like scraping a knife across a pot (like youd use on the stove lol...) any ideas? thanks

If it's a squealing/screeching sound, then that's probably just your break pads needing to be replaced. I heard somewhere that manufacturers create the pads to make that noise on purpose, so that you'll know when to replace them. After doing more research, I think my problem really is the CV joints though...

Hmmmm.... Yeah, check your CV joints. I just run my hand all around the rubber boot, if you hit alot of grease and can even feel the tear, you know what you got. Be weary about driving like that though dude. It can be dangerous. As far as shimmy at highway speeds, you may want to have your tires balanced. As far as cost, just for the parts alone, you can spend an easy 100 bucks. I dropped about 120-ish for doing both of mine. Although, I replaced the CV myself, so I didn't pay labor

DChriste - As far as a scraping sound, brakes will do that. It can either be worn pads or warped rotors, even lots of brake dust can cause squeal. For dust, you can find brake parts cleaner. As well, not applying the brake pad grease to the back of the pads when replacing may lead to squeal because the grease helps to "soak up" alot of the vibration that would lead to what we hear as "squeal".
