As for the woodgrain trim, parts are showing off white. Anyone know what's causing this? Any solution?
The last is speakers. One of the rears is utterly toast and the driver's tweeter is either blown or something.
I'm guessing normal 6x9s can go in the back, but what're people doing for the fronts?
I read an old post about the tweeters not really being tweeters but just small normal speakers. I do like the overall sound quality of the system (despite missing a couple of speakers) and would like to keep it looking factory.
I'm planning on pulling the factory stereo and replacing it with a nice Sony MP3 CD deck.
Can the front speakers be powered by the Deck's internal AMP (around 22 Watt RMS) or should I put in an amp for them? I'm planning on putting an amp in for the rears.
One last question. The car came with a factory alarm, the remote having two buttons, unlabeled. Both buttons seem to arm/disarm the system.
Anyone have any information on this? Is it an imobilizer?
the "corrosion" on the factory wheels is very common. mostly is just the clear coat finish breaking down from age&time/weather conditions/road salt ect.....
from the pic of your wheel it looks like you got some curb rash on the lip there, caused from the driver scraping the side of wheel/tire against a curb when parking.
not sure about the woodgrain trim turning white in spots, sorry
as for the speakers yeah 6x9" for the rear deck will work and 6 3/4" for the front door
+ you should be able to fit a 1" tweeter on the ends of the dash if you want to. theres lots of options for speakers out there may i suggest crutchfield.com < nice site for reference
make sure whatever headunit you get has at least 2 outs for what you want to do, it should power the fronts quite alright
on the camry keyfob the top button is lock/arm and the bottom is un-lock/disarm. if you have an ingition immobilizer it is built into the actual key.
my 6 1/2 drivers fit perfectly into the hole in the front doors.
tweeters reproduce higher frequencies and play an important role. if you already have them in the car (stock) dont get rid of them, because the midwoofer cant get the detail that tweeters have.

I've got factory tweeters in the car, but the driver's side isn't sounding right compared to the passenger side. The lower end seems the same side to side but the upper range is muted.
So, I'm thinking either there's a broken wire in the door(improbable) or the tweeter itself is dead.
WOODGRAIN TRIM
=============
I had the woodgrain trim when I got the car, I hated it having the white spots and the separating of the layers, so I took it out. I also thought it looked stupid on a Camry. It turns out that the OEM woodgrain is nothing more than an elaborate sticker. Here's how to remove it with NO damage to the car:
-Go to Lowe's Paint Department, ask them for a set of blue plastic Bondo spatulas ($0.88 for a Three Pack), they work great for prying off the trim without damaging the panel underneath.
-Get it under the bottom layer of the wood trim. Push hard but be sure to get under the glue as much as possible, as it means that you'll have to remove less glue residue later. Just get under and pry it off, no special tricks just pry.
-When its off, to get the glue residue off, try Simple Green, or if you're cheap like me, Windex, Fantastik or 409.
-Quite often the stain from the trim stains the plastic nearby. The miracle that removes that with no damage to anything is: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser. Get it wet and rub the stain and it will go away easily. Just use a plastic shiner (Armor All or F2001 Leather Polish) later to make it shine again.
ALARM SYSTEM
===========
I have the same stupid alarm system. The remote is as Autobox says. When activated it will piss you off to no end, that's why I never use it. If you need more info on the VIP brand stock alarm go to your dealer and they can tell you about it, if they won't or don't, I'll post a scan of my owners manual.
FACTORY MAG WHEELS
================
My Lincoln Town Car came with Anodized Aluminum Rims and I sandblasted, used metal filler and repainted them. Mag Wheels are harder though, and yours is a flat faced rim which is also harder yet. That calls for a body shop repair of the wheels or a replacement.
If you choose to get them repaired, don't just get them spray repainted, get them powder coated, it costs about $40 - $50 a wheel and it lasts longer and is much more durable. I had my sister's Explorer's rims powder coated (they are mag wheels) 2 years ago, and they haven't corroded at all. She goes offroad and tows horses with it too. No chips or deep scratches (deep meaning paint is not buffable back to new).
Miles???
Condition??? (Exterior looks great)
Interior shots??
I'm partial to Gen 4's. Of course, I wouldn't mind a 4.5, 5, or 6?
Let's see, details...
The car came from Ebay, got a smokin deal on it.
It's got quite a few miles(124,000) but seems to have taken them well.
Other than the one rub on the passenger mirror http://home.inter.net/~moellerg/pickup/damageMirror.jpg
the exterior seems practically perfect.
The interior has some signs of wear, mostly the mats (replaceable) and the strange white patches in the woodgrain trim. I'll post interior pics once I get the car all the way home. (It's stuck at the border while the title catches up with me, the old one got lost and the dealership is expediting a new one)
Just to let u know...the rear 6x9 are fitted on an adapter plate that will not work for most/any aftermarket 6x9 speakers...screwing them into the rear will be a challenge...u might want to buy an adapter plate. Unless you can find other stock speakers to replace those.
The fronts also use an adapter...they are 6.5". If you get aftermarket speakers...go get some 3 way speakers for the rear and 2 way speakers for the front. Or 3 way for the front too if you've got no tweeters up by the mirror area.

Post some more about the car man, its nice.
Good Luck,
GT6
Thanks for the advice on the mags and woodgrain, I'll have a poke at fixing those up once I get the car here. The mags will be a good winter project since I'm planning on throwing 14" steel rims and winter tires on it to keep the mags from getting hurt worse in Winnipeg winters.
As for the alarm, I think I'll ignore it completely since I'm putting my own system in (bidirectional remote, remote start, trunk release and so on)

Do you have a source of adapter plates to fit after market 6x9 and 6.5s into the car?
I do have the factory tweeters in the mirror area but they need work so I'll be looking at replacing them as well.
I found mines on ebay from this one guy...but the problem is they still didnt fit exactly .two out of the 3 mounting holes fit and i had to drill the 3rd. which isnt a big problem at all. But all i can say is if you are doing this yourself, try to get it right the firs ttime. My rear's still rattle because of so many mistakes i made along the way. In fact i'd rather pay for professional installation by someone who knows that they're doing. The fronts were easy but the rears sucked.

Please note, although he states for 98....my rears were not like that. He had made a special few for 97-99....so i'd check to see exactly what kind you have before purchasing anything.
