Intake Cleaning

Well,
I finally did it. I had my Toyota Tech friend come over Sunday and we removed the entire upper and lower intake on my 1994 1MZ-FE and cleaned it up real nice. I did the AICS polish and all new gasgets for every one that needed them. When I 1st removed it, it was coated with gunk and black goo and crap. Not pretty. I used 3 gal of acetone and a metal parts washer. Acetone cut the crud in no time flat! Then, while I was washing and cleaning, David (Toyota tech friend) was using the dremel and a polishing stone and did a nice job on the AICS. Then, I used the dremel and the flex tool and "polished" the intake runners as best I could. Basically, I smoothed out any really rough spots and made it look smoother. Once all the cleaning and buffing was done, then we put it all back. Fired up the Ole Cam and took it for a spin. Since I pulled the battery cable, the ECU was reset and the performance was "stock", but it WAS more crisp and responcive.
Also, it fired up very quickly, not in 2-3 seconds, but a soon as the starter moved the flywheel... vroom! It will take a day of two for the ECU to re-learn, but 1st impressions are...

1. Faster starts.
2. Cripser throttle responce.
3. MAYBE a pony or two... that is butt-dyno numbers...
4. Hopefully better MPG.

I will keep you posted!

How long of a process was it to get the whole intake off and do all that work? I would like to do that.

We got started around.... 11:00am and finished at 3:00pm. And that was taking lunch and with beer and chit chat. You will need the following items...

1. Upper and lower intake gasgets
2. AICS outer and inner gasgets
3. Throttle body gasget
4. Some silicone rubber sealent.
5. 2-3 gal of Acetone for cleaning.
6. Dremel
7. Dremel flex extension
8. Dremel polishing stones and buffing wheels.

Also, TAKE SEVERAL PHOTOS BEFORE YOU START!!!! All the hoses and stuff start looking the same when you start putting it back together!

The silicone is for the outer edges of the ACIS on the inner gasget, where it meets the plenum. It is literally, a finger coating on each side, but it is needed.

The biggest plus of the event was the cleaning and polishing of the ACIS valve area. If nothing else, that alone, to me, was the biggest help. It is CLEAN and very smooth and should function at peak performance. Also, just knowing that all in there is clean.. makes me feel better. Another thng I plan on doing is make another metal gasget for the EGR. Ther s one there, but I am going to make the gasget with a pin hole to restrict as much exhaust gas as I can. It will still open, but flow only a fraction of what it is now. I noticed THAT is the culprit that is coating the intake with goo!
