2nd Generation Engine noise

I have compared my 89 camry 4 cyl to another 89 camry 4cyl and found my engine to be much louder. I hear like a clunking noise found mostly on diesel engines. It's not really as loud as diesel engine noise but its close. Do I need to adjust valve clearances or something? Are they even adjustable? Do I need more oil in the engine? Or is the engine just too old?

Have you been keeping up with all the maintenance? Your timing could be off or you could have crappy oil.

Red face

Whenever I see a post that's a "there's a noise from"....

Think about HOW MANY different places in a motor/front end a noise
could be coming from...

Pinging/rattle, gudgeon pins, piston slap, conrod bearing, excessive wear on cam lobes....

Broken engine mount/s, worn bushes... etc etc = list is endless

And guessing without a sondclip is virtually pointless...

This might sound simple and I wish it was a "sticky" but for a quick
FREE diagnosis take it to ANY mechanic for a FREE QUOTE !

That's why quotes were invented, but make sure it's FREE first !
