american edition were either 95 or 96 since they are only 3.5 model years. they typically came with V6s, tan leather interior and sunroof, often equipped with either gold or silver 14" BBS rims. otherwise, it was all the same camry really....i think it was like an option package.
I think they do an American edtion for each gen. I have seen them in gen3, and gen 4 for sure. I think I saw a gen 5/5.5 yesterday and it had to be the ugliest thing I have ever seen. The gold two tone on the bottom jsut does not match up with the body lines of the bumpers and all. it was FUGLY.

Agree with RedPhoenix. I have a gen4 american edition. I don't know what that means though. When I bought it, the owner say nothing about the american edition thing. So, I am assumng it is just another regular camry.

I think American Editions are just something the dealer (or maybe it's a regional thing) puts together. Slap a badge on the front fenders, and add $500 to the bottom line.
Most that I've seen have wood trim and the gold package- but I think the dealer just adds on an accessory or two and calls it an American Edition.
I have researched this as I have a 1998 Camry American Edition. Most came with tacky glued on Wood Trim, had the Gold Badging and are no better than a regular Camry. I live about 2 tenths of a mile from the Toyota Dealership it was originally bought at and they said that, those were the only differences.
Lincoln is notorious for pulling this special edition crap. They have made a Jack Nicklaus, Palm Beach, Presidential, Polo, LaPanache and Marina Editions(there are more). That is in ADDITION to the regular Executive, Signature and Cartier (now Ultimate) editions.
I bought my Camry with TRD body kit, BBS wheels, carbon fiber interior etc. and it also has a American Edition badging in Gold color (gold edition) and it is a 1999 V6 Camry.
