humming noise @ 140km/h+

er... yea... this has been going on for a while... as soon as i start to go over 140km/h my car (93 5sfe) starts to get an incredibly loud humming noise from the engine bay... my engine isn't about to crap out on me is it? it's got 266k km on it... any ideas on what might be wrong?

Is it related to engine rpm or road speed ? If it is road speed I woul look at wheel bearings or tires. If it is engine rpm look for an alternator bearing or something of the like or a possible exhaust shield loose.

er.. it's hard to tell if it's rpm or road speed. because i have an auto, i can't keep it above certain rpm for too long. why i think it's road speed is because around 140 i'm around 3.5k rpm... and when i accelerate from a stop i sometimes touch 4k. even though it's loud. it's not this type of hum... so i'm assuming it's road speed. my tires are new and i've had this problem even before i replaced my tires. i just replaced a wheel bearing and i still have this problem

Did you replace the right bearing? Don't feel bad because I have done it before sometimes the damn sound travels, you think it is one side but nope it is the other! What does it sound like?

it sounds like a reallie loud humming coming from the engine bay?.. the second i go over 140 i hear it. once i go back down to 140 or less it's gone

but if it's wheel bearings the wheel with the bad bearing has some vertical (or was it sideways) 'play' right?
