3rd Generation Custom Exhaust Question...

As of right now on my '94 V6 coupe I only have a GReddy muffler for exhaust performance. I am going to bring my car to a exhuast shop. What should I have them do? Remove cat? Fabricate a y-pipe/headers? 3" exhaust piping? If anyone has any information or tips about which makes sense for $ and HP, it would be EXTREMELY appreciated. Thank you.

if you want looks you should get a y pipe, 3" piping, and 2 muffler of your choice. now if you want performance you cant have a y pipe it restricts the exhaust flow so i would go with a high flow catylac converter, cat back exhaust sytem preferably 3", and whatever muffler you would prefer. keep in mind i did not mention headers now if you want headers go with the ceramic type headers there best in performance.

if you're willing to spend the money, get them to fabricate you up some headers and a y-pipe, along with the rest of the deal- high flow cat, 2.5" piping, and keep your muffler as long as it's free-flowing

if you don't want to drop a whole lot of $$$, then do everything except for the headers...it's hte y-pipe that's hte most restrictive point on the 1mz exhuasts

and go 2.5"....3" is too big and you'll lose back pressure unless you go boost of some sort

3 inch is way to big. 2.5 is ideal with out major mods. i.e. turbo, major compresion.
and as far as HP for the $ after the muffler you are going to spend alot for a little.
but that is how it goes

Yeah, I know for sure. I'm going to buy a GReddy Evo catback exhaust for a V6 Camry (gen4) and then just custom fit it into my car. I think a high flow cat and a custom fabricated y-pipe plus the catback exhaust would lay down some good gains in hp. I would like to guess around 10-20 whp if that...But it's all worth it when you love your Camry.

3" is way too big for an na 3.0. 2.25", 2.5" at most, we arent psuhing 350-400hp so we dont need that much flow after the cat.

10whp with air/fuel tuning IF youre lucky. the only real gains you will get are improved initial throttle response(you will think you have mor epower because the inital response is now much more lively) and maybe a small top end gain in HP due to the less restrictive y peice.

OD switched off, even when not in 3rd results in major power loss/rpm drop.

3rd Generation Pics

Anyone got PHOTOS of a custom "Y" config? I have an "NA" 94 V6 and am VERY interested in the "Y" pipe idea. On the stock unit, The "headers" are ok... but the collector is kinda funky looking. The Rear bank does a U-Turn then, leaves. And, from what I hear and read, there are "baffles" or some sorta deflector plates in the U-Turn area for flow dynamics or something? All adding up to restriction. So, my idea was to cut the pipes low and weld on from there... and reuse the flex pipe a bit further back, and remove the resonator. Leaving the cat and keeping the stock pipe size, just add better flow to the "Y" area.
Is that a good, bad, ok.. crazy idea? I mean, it is NA, so, I am just looking for better responce and a few ponies!
On my "project" My Toyota Tech buddy has a junk 1MZ-FE engine and tranny. I am going to purchase and do a slow buildup on that, then swap out.
But, for now... the "Y" pipe is the ticket.
Any thoughts.. and PHOTOS?

if you take off the resonator its gonna kinda pop and spit a bit during revv down, and when slowing while in gear. when my y pipe broke it had no back pressure from resonator, so thats what it did. man i miss that exhaust note, but dont miss the loudness and sluggish-ness.

i have a Y fitting to my car with 4 tip dual exhast... i'll take pictures of it later and post them up... i have a flow master glass pack with a Y fitting spreading out to 4 tip dual exhast. sorry to mocking bird it just had to get the flow master name in there lol.

That's not the kind of y-pipe we're talking about here....but yeah, that's how people have been doing dual exhausts

no, sorry, most of us don't.....though you could try pm'ing kirbydude...I think he took pictures of his at the shop before they installed his

and though you could chop up your stock y-pipe and replace the collector and the part above it (where most of the restriction is), it would be best to just go to a fabrication shop and have them do it.....your regular mechanic most likely won't be able to do it properly, the rest of the piping is actually larger as well, and an improperly designed one can actually be detrimental to your performance if there is no after tuning done: case in point- kirbydude after getting custom headers, y-pipe and exhaust done, lost lots of power (he's blown) until he brought it back to the shop and his car was properly tuned via safcII)
- as well as deal with turbulence from an incorrectly positioned collector

so long story short....go to a shop to do it and they'll do it right the first time

- to the best of my knowledge there are y-pipes by jpperformance and ultimate racing (not anymore), and then there are a couple of custom ones scattered throughout the camry community
