Gen5 My Squeeky Drum

Well for a few months now i have been hearing a slight squeek from the outside when i take my foot completley off the brake. Sometimes 2 rapid squeeks.

Its the same kinda sound a swing with metal chains sounds like when it squeeks.

Now i posted this before thinking it was the front brakes. Everyone told me to get new ones, But i checked the front brakes and there is enough pad there to last me till my oil change in about 2 weeks even for a couple more months.

I located the squeek to be coming from the rear of the car. This sound also accours when i pull and release the E-Brake. Scince the E-Brake locks the rear brakes im thinking that maybe the Drum brakes are bad?

Back in August i did try to fix my E-Brake because it doesnt stop the car like it should. (It doesnt even slow the car down). So i tried tightening the bolt on the E-Handle and it had some effect but to be safe i put it back to the way it was.

So what should i look at to eliminate the squeek?

Try opening the drums and spraying brake cleaner all over. It should get rid of some dust and dirt. Catch the fluid in a pan and dispose of properly.

To adjust the brakes, this thread has some information.

To open the drums, there's two small holes on the drums that are threaded. Rlease the e-brake, and tighten two screws down in those two holes and it will force the drums off. Tighten the screws half a turn at a time alternating between the two screws. The screws are M8-1.25 or M12-1.25 IIRC.

when you adjsut the rear brakes also pull the shoes away from the backing plate jsut a little witha flat bade screwdriver. When you do this take a little bit of high temp grease of lithium grease and put jsut a small amount where the shoes contact the backing plates. THis should help the squeaking also.
