Camry Hood Latch Failure

I recently had the hood on a 1996 Camry open while driving. Fortunately I was going slow enough that it did not fully open until I had stopped. Had I been on the freeway minutes earily, things might have been differant. Not knowing the problem I was able to wire the hood shut before moving on. I am still not sure why the primary hood latch did not hold, it appeared ok when tested (perhaps the hood was not fully closed). The safety latch was found not to engage fully, a few good pulls on the hood caused the safety latch to disengage. It appears the safety latch bracket hook bolted to the frame was set back too much to allow it to fully engage the latch release fitting bolted to the hood. Perhaps the car had suffered frame damage causing this problem, I could not see any. Has anyone had this problem before? If you have a Camry, you might check your safety latch, just to be sure.

so nobody has an answer for this?
right now my hood is only latched by the safety, the regular latch won't keep it down.
anyone have a suggestion?

Sounds like he found the problem.

internetautomar When your hood is down is it flush with the body? If not then the posts in the frame above your lights can be adjusted up and down. That might be your problem.

Also the latch itself has 4 bolts that allow you to adjust the latch up down left and right. They torque up at 69in lbf.
