shaking?!

Ok, lately when I am at a stop and in Drive (My car is automatic).. My steering wheel starts to shake and vibrate and it is driving me nuts. If I hit it, I mean absolutely slam the thing, it stops shaking for a bit but then starts up again. As soon as I am moving the shaking stops, or if I change into Neutral, the shaking and vibrating will stop as well.

Anyone have any clue as to whats causing this? And how I can fix it.
Im worried that its something with the gears since this only occurs when im in drive, and at a stop.

How do I check them? Is it something I can do myself or should I go to a mechanic for that?

well try this.

pop the hood and have someone start the car or jump start the car with a home made button to the starter.

see if the engine moves around, that can be one way of telling if the motor mounts are bad, also you can look under the car and look at the motor mounts and check to see if there splitting, cracked etc..

as for the steering box, a mechanic would be the best way to check that.

mine does it too, but only when the radiotor fan is running it, could be a malfunctioning heat sensor ?

My g/fs '95 does the same thing. She took it to a shop and they said all the motor mounts and tranny mount was worn (but not broken yet), and it was ok to drive a while yet. She is waiting till i get there to fix them (not sure i can do them). They also said the "flexible" exhaust piece may need rewelding once the motor mounts are fixed.
