4th Generation high idle in the morning?

i have a 00' w/ a v6 & 5 speed, when i turn it on in the morning or after its been sitting a while it idles pretty high for about 5 or 10 min (even if i drive for a bit, when i stop @ a light or take it out of gear) about 1500-1700rpm. why does it do that?

It is normal. Camry's (Toyotas?) have a very high idle cold start setting.

Sorry I can't believe that it is normal for a car to idle at 1500-1700 for 5 minutes or longer. I would have it checked out. More then likely a temp sensor.

Man do you have any specs on that because he is talking 1500 rpm! If it is an auto it is going to slam into 1st or reverse pretty good at the speed!

His is a manual...but even so, mine does it too. Even when it's hot outside. People say that just because it's hot outside, doesn't mean the motor is hot, but still, I don't think it should take that long to go down to normal idle RPM. Also, for me it idles at about 1500 rpm when you first start it, but only when it's in park. Still, it only goes down a couple hundred RPM when you put it in drive. And yeah, it is a little bit of a jolt if you put it in gear right away. That's why I always let it go down to at least 1k RPM in park, then put it in gear.

I wouldn't worry about it. My 93 camry v6 does the same thing. One time it was 40 degrees F below zero and she idled close to 2000. Had the block heater plugged in too. But the outlet was disfunctional.
But in the morning when the engine is cold, my cam will usually idle around 14-1500rpm.

Belive me it`s normal!! If you had a little knowlege about cars
you would also know WHY it has to have a elevated rpm when cold.

Ouch that hurt! All I know is my wifes 04 doesn't idle at 1500-1700 for 5 to 10 minutes as th OP said his does. Unless you can show me the specs for that high of idle for that long of time I am sticking by my story! By the way the last motor I rebuilt was an Izuzu 4BD2T truck diesel which needed to be resleeved and pistons dropped into it.
The last tranny I done was a 1999 GMC 4L60E which had exploded a sunshell and was having problems with the TC unlocking then locking up but I am sure you know how to fix that problem ( You have to use a special reamer to ream the valve body and put in a sleeve kit).
Last brake job was on a C6500 rears pads/rotors and rebuilt a caliper. Not a bad job if you have the proper tools (1" impact does wonders and a 30 ton jack sure helps when the truck is fully loaded!)
Upper and lower ball joints on my Dad's Dodge Ram was the last suspension work. Scanned a 2000 S-10 the other day (secondary air problem w the air pump) There is a TSB out on that. Getting ready to do a off frame restoration off a 1989 Bronco II if I can make room in by shop. I have already rebuilt the motor and tranny a couple of years ago 2.9/A4LD.

Got a GMC 3500 HD starting to look like it will need some injection pump work pretty quick.
Luckily my boys Chevy Lumina is holding up good!!

Gary

BY the way what is your occupation?
