Gen1 a140e trans questions

Ok guys im new to this website, not an owner of a toyota myself but earlier this week the transmission in my grandpa's car took a dump on him and is in need of getting a new one, now its an old 86 camry with an a140e transmission according to the code off the firewall. We went ahead and headed down to cerritos and went to nippon motors and purchased a JDM a140e transmission, he took it to CA Auto in whittier and they pulled the old transmission off the car and said that the 2 transmissions were completely diffrent, now i havnt gotten a chance to get out his way and check out the old transmission to see what is diffrent, but from what ive been told the physical housing is diffrent and will not bolt up to the motor. So my question here is what diffrences and variations exist in the A140E transmission. And if possible can someone tell me what it is that i need to get him. I am generally a very automotive knowledgable person, I have 5+ years industry experince and am currently a student in a auto tech school with straight A's and head of my class so dont get scared to be technical with me i can handle it. I am having a hard time with the idea that these are diffrent transmissions as i grabbed the A140E code straight off the firewall. however im not a toyota guy by trade and I am young and being in the industry i do understand that there are always surprises and such like this so any help you guys can provide me is greatly appreciated.

somebody may have to correct me on this, but I don't think the gen2 camrys have the a140E tranny? the gen 2 camry that your grandpa has has the 3sfe 4cyl engine, while the gen3 4 cyl 5sfe (which uses the a140E) mounts very different from the 3sfe

'86 Camry's are gen1, not gen2. I just looked at my gen1, and it does indeed use the a140e transmission.

He has a 2SELC engine, so it is very possible that it mounts different from the more common 3sfe and 5sfe. It could be that the transmission came from a later camry that used a 3sfe or 5sfe, and the mounts are different. I honestly don't know, but my transmission is the a140e, as it says on the firewall.

Gen 2 with 3S-FE and auto tranny use the A140E or A140L.

A140E = electronic
A140L = mechanical
