No the snow itself doesnt harm your rims, but salt does.
So if they salt the roads a lot where you live then youre
better off with steel rims with some nice caps instead.
And one other ting.. rims can get unbalanced because the snow
sticks to the rims and freeze.

Its not just the rims that are the problem. Your problem is the tires on the rims. Most lower profile tires only have tread to grip concrete and disperse water, they hold NO value on a sheet of ice because they will NOT grip. Plus if you hit some ice and slide into a curb which would u rathar replace? some after market rims or some steelies?

Salt does more damage to some rims than to others. If you have polished rims or chrome, it will do more damage than if you have more of a flat finish to them. (For example- the rims that come on 2006 XLE v6 Camrys will suffer worse than rims from a 2006 SE v6)

I have the 15" alloys that came on Gen 4 camrys- and salt really doesn't treat them well. I try to wax of put polish on them before the first snow, that way it minimizes the damage... but if you still have the steel rims, I'd use them instead.

All of the above plus you can't see the curb when its snowed in.
Thats why I kept my 15" alloy uglies.
