Cool Questions for guys who custom painted their interiors...

I want to custom paint all my interior vinyl and I know that masking will be a lot harder for me because for one thing, I basically have to mask a whole lot of my interior and don't want to risk messing up and having paint on places its not supposed to be, because I've messed up before with a masking job. Man that was a long run-on sentence.

Anyways, for you guys who have custom painted your own interiors, I just have one question and concern. If one doesn’t disassemble and later re-assemble all the screws, clips and parts properly, then you get all sorts of rattles and junk that are so darn annoying to me. so I'd like to seek some wisdom for experience(s).

are There Any disassembling guides that can walk me through disassembling my interior parts. I already know how to do the door panels, cup holders w/ storage console box, & glove compartment box.

My main concern is the big huge front dash across the front of the interior. If I take it off will the SRS bag blow open, what about the steering wheel airbag while taking the steering wheel off? Also the side and rear pillars and bottom feet pillars, I don't know.

I really need a guide and some help. .

First off, what year? I think that's key. Other than that... I think the Haynes Manual should show you where the clips are and all... I've got a copy of the service manual that's floating around here, so I'll take a peek on that, but I think it's mainly a couple screws on the bottom and sides of the dash, and I believe the whole thing will come off directly, including the SRS. But... I don't have much experiance in this. Maybe a search will help?

I took a look at the manual and you don't have to worry about the SRS exploding on you... but there are a few things that you've gotta watch out for. It says that you have to wait at least 90 seconds after putting the ignition in the LOCK position and unhooking the battery before attempting any work on the airbags... if you try it within 90 seconds you can set the airbag off. The other thing that you might want to do is remove the airbag sensors from the car before playing with the dash. It's probably not necessary, but just as a precaution. Other than that... just be careful with it. I don't remember exactly the process, but basically you have to remove the front door sill trim pieces, the steering wheel and column, the center console, glovebox, radio, all that crap, and then you can unbolt the dashboard itself. IIRC, it's just screws holding the actual dash panel onto the car. It sounds like it'll take a bit of time, and I've never done it before myself, but that's what I got from the manual. I'll take a look at it later after my afternoon classes and try to post up the relevant pages...

I would take it out. its sooo much easier to work on stuff if you do it that way. It takes time, but well worth it

I did my dash in the car, and I must say, that it would be so much easier/ better to make it out. I was not happy with my results at all. When Spring rolls around I'm gonna get a different dash outta the yard and do it out side the car, then swap it for mine.

Also, I'd like to add that the duplicolor everybody said I should use was crap. I did the dash with that, and it sucks. Then I did one door panel with the expensive stuff (like $9 a can) and that stuff was even worth in my opinion. What I finally ended up using is actually meant for putting on bumpers, but it looks way better, and seems to be holding up way better then the other two kinds I tried. I don't remeber the brand, but I can check and post when I get home tonight.

I've painted quite a few interiors and most of the times I've used Krylon Fusion plastic paint. At times I have also used ordinary spray and it held up good for me. Before I paint I usually use some warm water with some soap powder or detergent to get off any grease, dirt, or armorall etc. Then I wet sand it a bit. That's my method of doing and it hasn't failed me since. Also take your time, and don't rush.
