2nd Generation Oil Pressure Gauge gone crazy

hey everyone. i just recently wired an oil pressure gauge into my gen 2 camry. i was out driving it tonight and the neddle shot up to 100 psi, then the needle bounced back and forth eratically (sp?) does anyone know what might be wrong with it?

thank you all for the help,

Joe Portera

It's those cheapo oil pressure gauge senders, they are not very lasting. Invest in a good quality oil pressure gauge like DEFI. You get what you pay for.

the brand thats in there is faze. its not a cheap brand by any means. i really want to try and get it working because i have my turbo kit on the way. its not a mechanical gauge, its an electrical that i tapped into the pressure tap on the motor.

Use the orignal oil pressure switch location on the front of the block and use a t-adaptor to still use the switch and have the oil pressure snesor in there aswell. Then run the electrical or mechanical connection into the cabin.

^ Easier said then done.

The factory oil pressure switch is 1/8" BSPT.

Sender that comes with the gauge is most likely 1/8" NPT.

So your going to need the right fittings, adapters, etc...

Lightbulb Earthed out?

Most guage senders work on earth resistance so if the wire you ran to the guage

is rubbing on the hole trough the firewall it will be earthing and making the guage
shoot up to it's highest reading !

True, it is easier said than done...but here...we have Autometer guages...and if u take in the original sender to the shop, they will match up and adaptor to suit no probs...just a matter of screwing it all together.

Sounds about right. Only here up the holler where I grew up it would be a "ground" or a"short" Check the connections at the sender and the guage too.

Or go with a mechanical guage. Then your problems will be hot oil on your shins if/when it starts leaking.
