Alright, so I was coming home from school today. I had to take a left turn into a residential area, and there were cars coming towards me, so I turned into an alley to beat the wait. I was driving down the alley, windows open and radio on low, and I hear this funky sound. At first I thought it was the radio, but I turned it off and listened carefully. I could faintly hear it most of the time, but when I passed by garages I heard this pretty clear "Fwap-fwap-fwap-fwap-fwap" sound coming from the passenger's side, almost as if I had a piece of paper glued to the tire and it was hitting the wheelwell with every rotation. I tried slowing down and the sound slowed down too, so I know it's probably something to do with the wheel, and I supect it's the front wheel, but does anyone have any idea what it could be? I have to eventually get new shocks because mine aren't working too well, and I might get new brake pads and all soon, but is there anything else I should be watching out for?
a good mechanic is like a good bj giver- you always go the person that gave the service to you, and if they are not available - you just sit at home and fiddle with the problem yourself until a substandard result is met
try checking the tread, maybe something may not have punctured, but did get stuck between the tread...
all i can think of for now

Brake lights aren't broken, I just don't brake.

It could be your hub caps if you still have them. CSOmetimes the sidewall flexing will cause them to rub on teh tire and it will make noise. It could also be the brake pads rubbing on the rotors slightly. When you release the brakes they may still contact the rotors slightly.
You can pull the hubcaps and drive it again and see if the noise goes away pretty easily. IF it is the brakes there isnt necesarily anything wrong with them they jsut make noises sometimes.

Hmm... I have been getting squeaking from the brakes a little while back... I'll have to listen later when I leave school. I haven't heard it lately but I might just be used to it.
I know how to do brakes, so that wouldn't be too much of a problem. However... how hard is it to do CV Joints? I've got some mechanical inclination and I've worked on a few cars/machines before, but I'm a relative virgin as far as it comes to suspension/drivetrain. Is this something I can attempt at home, or will I need a pro to do it? And... how much will it cost? (Poor college student, have to think about money...)

Replacing axles is not that hard for the most part. Just have to loosen the lower control arm remove the axle nut then use a prybar of some sort to persuade the axle out of the tansmission.
As far as cost you should bea bel to find on for 150.00 USD or less at pretty much any parts store.

That's not bad... and that's one per side I'm assuming? While I'm replacing the axles... is there anything else I can/should do to get the car to run better? I figure if I'm going to replace anything I may as well do it with the best stuff... or, at least best and reasonably priced...

jsut make sure you dont damage the axle seals onteh transmission while you are doing it. There really isnt anything else that you would need to replacce while doing the axles.
YEs it is one per side. I will tell you the passenger side is a little bit harde due to the fact it is longer and ahs a mount that is bolted to the back of the engine blck to help control torque steer. IT is not terrible but it is a little bit harder to do. Same basic steps but you can take the mount off and remove the entire thing then remove the axle from the mount and primary shaft taht comes out of the trans mission.
