I need help! Just got an "88 Camry that was grandpa's car and can't get it to pass smog. Gave it a tune up, new catalytic converter, new plugs and wires, new ERG valve and still can't get it to pass. Anybody have any suggestions as what to do next?
check engine light isn't on. they say we are very close to passing, but still off enough to fail. tried three times. where would i get the additive? do you remember what its called?
and how hot did you run the car before the tests? makes a huge difference, and the amount that they run your car isn't enough to warm up your car sufficiently

took the car out and ran it up and down the highway about 110mph for fifteen minutes, then took it through town for another 10 winding it up pretty good. the first smog tech told him no additives, but he had already tried one.

what do tune-ups do? cuz i have no idea about them. my smog check is due on 12/13/05...and my check engine light is still on.
it came on after i installed the Ripp headers. btw, i smell a lot of fumes under the car (near the cat converter) and a lot out of the exhaust whenever i warm-up or come to a stop. the only thing that may be wrong is an air leak near the catalytic converter (at the end of the downpipe to the beginning of the cat, i see water dripping in between what holds those two together)...could that be why?

How is your O2 sensor?

The worst thing you can do is just go around putting crap in your engine and replacing working parts.
First things first
Post your smog readout
We can all look at it and see what is too high and give you a suggestion. If we cannot come to a conclusion I would just pay the money and take it to a shop that will run a smog diagnostic on it and they will pin point the problem and you can repair it. See the problem is that without the readouts we do not know what is happening in your engine and as complicated as an engine is it is near impossible to diagnose with no data

I am having the damn near exact same problem. My 88 is failing the CO and Hydrocarbons, but not by much. I heard the O2 and cat may be the culprits.
The failed readings are as follows on my particular car:
CO @ 2500 RPM - 2.47% (1.2% passes)
HC @ Idle - 269 ppm (220 passes)
CO @ Idle - 2.07% (1.2% passes)
The passing grade was the HC @ 2500, which were 182 ppm.
The first time I went, I don't think I had the car warm enough, but the readings changed for the worse in some cases. Mostly minor, but the CO got worse at idle.
Any of the pros have an idea as to what may be the problem?
Also, here in Ohio, if you can prove you spent $300 to fix the problem, even if you don't pass, they'll waiver the car. I don't know if other states do that, but it might be worth checking out.
