The check engine light recently came on so I took my 1998 Camry to the Toyota dealer. I was told that the light came on because there is a small leak in my charcoal canister. The Toyota dealer has a bad reputation in my town so I don't know if they are telling me the truth. The check engine light is now off and hasn't come back on since I took it to the dealer 6 months ago. I was told by another Camry owner that the check engine light can come on if the gas cap isn't tightened properly. After the light came on, I noticed that the gas cap wasn't tightened properly when I filled up my car the last time.
If I really have a leak in my charcoal canister, why did the check engine light go off after it was serviced and did not come back on in the last 6 months? Does this thing need to be replaced right away? What will happen if I don't fix it and just wait until all of the charcoal leaks out? They want a ridiculous price to replace this thing and I don't know where I can go to get another opinion. We do not have another Toyota dealer in my hometown.
if your car is giving out a CEL, get it read and look up what it means. I'm sure you can find a local kragens/ autozone/ smallbox autoparts clone store that will be glade to read your code for you.
the canister is related to emmisions, i wouldn't worry about needing replacement [soon] unless your state required a smog test soon but it may affect mileage
part cost should be around 250?> labor...another 30 to 60?
try a local shop and get a quote from them if you can not do it yourself.

Brake lights aren't broken, I just don't brake.
--Can honestly go to a parts counter and ask for brake shoes for the front brakes.
--Likes long walks on the beach.... once it's lit by a massive bonfire.
I was told that it would cost $500 to replace the canister (including labor).
I just have a hard time believing that there is anything wrong with the canister since the light has not come back on during the last 6 months. Will it do any damage to the car if I just don't fix it? I don't have to worry about passing a smog test in my area.
If you wanna be completely sure everything is fine, then just go to any shop to have the vehicles OBD II monitors checked. It only takes a couple of minutes at the most. Ask them specifically if the EVAP monitor has ran to completion. If it has ran to completion without the MIL being on, then everything is fine and dandy.
Yea, those canisters cost $299 for a gen 3.5 V6 enine
go to a u-pull it place...guaranteed, if u find a camry...even without an engine which is about 99% in a junkyard..the left over char. canister will be in atelast 50% of camry's youll find...itll probably cost ya $10 if that too....and because of the enclosure they're in..they last a really long time with little or no damage. Most likely u can use any from 92 (3vz-fe's) -> whenever 1mz's were stopped being used
Did you reset the light yourself or did it turn off itself?
Reason I ask is because emission codes are 2 trip codes. Which means the light wont come on unless the computer sees a fault in 2 complete driving cycles. If you have a small leak, and I mean really small leak, the computer might not reconize it all the time. its a possibility that the code was related to a leak with the charcoal canister, but you may never know unless you check the code when it comes back. A shop tech may want to make more money and fix the original small problem and add on something bigger. it happens everyday.
What motor does your Camry have?? If it is the I4 and the charcoal canister is in front of the master cylinder this is still under warranty to 14 years or 150,000 miles.
First of all, $500 is about right to replace the charcoal canister on a generation 4. My father-in-law just had it done on his 2001 4 cylinder, at the dealer. He paid $500; around $250 for the part and $250 for labor. The labor is so high because on the generation 4 it's on top of the gas tank. The tank has to be removed to replace the canister.
Check the link provided by tacojet and the subsequent link to the PDF file of affected cars for the extended warranty on this. If your car is included, copy the info and take it back to the dealer and insist that they replace the canister under waranty.
That said, If your car is not listed under the extended warranty coverage, I wouldn't do anything unless the light comes back on. If it's been off for 6 months, chances are that it will not come back on.
