3rd Generation Gasket Replacement and Oil change

This weekend im going to replace both valve cover gaskets and the oil pan. My rear valve cover gasket is leaking oil from the back and it is leaving some oil drops im my garahe floor, the engine also smells like hot oil evey time i put it in the garage after using it. Is the oil pan gasket easy to do? can i drop the pan without taking anything major out? And also i plan on changing the oil sice my oil only has 200 miles left from the 3,000 mile life i give it and im planning on using mobil 1 clean 5,000, Is that oil good for this engine? will it clean the engine internals since when you open the oil cap you can see a buch of hardened carbon in there that was there sice the day i got it. Will that mobil 1 oil clean it? will it cause any valvetrain clatter? Is any one using that oil?

pan is not hard to do. You will probably want to drop the exhaust jsut to make it more convenient. There are several people taht are using some form of Mobil1 oil. as for the carbon build up on teh oil cap it is fairly common to see that on older cars taht may have been questionably maintained. You will be abel to get a better idea of waht the engine looks like once you drop the pan and replace the valve cover gaskets. Switching to Mobil should not cause any valve train noise. There is soem discussion concerning switching toa synthetic oil on older higher mileage cars that there is the possibility of developing oil leaks since hte oil is thinner or something along those lines. IF you do a search on mobi1 I am sure you will find lots of posts about it.

One other thing the oil pan does not use a gasket, it uses RTV sealant. Just make sure you clean all of the old RTV off of both the block and the pan before putting the new on.

Im scared of using mobil 1 because of bad experience with it before. I used it on a minivan that i had a year ago and soon after changing the oil i've heard valve train clttering. some people say it was because the oils detergency was cleaning the supposedly gunk but i used to change the oil at evry 3,000 miles on the dot with castrol gtx i don't hink that threre was any stuff from the old oil.I looked at the mobil 1 bottle and i think that the 5,000 is not synthetic, the 7,500 is a synthetic blend and 15,000 is fully synthetic. Will the 5,000 clean the engine?
