Hypothetically...

I know the first-gen Cams get almost no attention here but I had a flash of brilliance... if not outright stupidity. I understand that from '84-'86 Toyota actually made a turbodiesel Cam (the 1C-T and 2C-T engines). How hard would it be to transplant a turbo off of one of those onto a 3s-fe? (This is beginning to sound like a dumbass newbie question, I know.. but its one i've been thinking about..) The only real problem i could think of is just finding a turbo b/c most of those 1st gen cars have been recycled into tuna cans by now. Remember I'm just throwing around an idea here... I have no intention of actually trying it.

You could just as easily swap on 3sgte parts, which are easier to find.

I'm not 100% positive, but I don't think you want to use a turbo designed for diesel applications on a gas motor without a proper rebuild.

I don't remember where I read it, but somebody was saying that its a bad idea because of clearances. But again, I'm not 100% on that one, maybe someone else can lend a hand.

3sgte

I see a lot of guys just swap the 3sfe for the 3sgte outright' is it possible to just get the turbo off one of those motors and transplant it? How much custom fabrication is needed? I know at the very least I'd need new pistons (dished), becuase the 3sfe's 9.4:1 compression ratio is far too high for a turbo car even with only 5-6 psi of boost. (My old 88 Tbird Turbocoupe had a CR of only 8.0:1!) Also I'd need the 3sgte hardware and whatnot as far as the computer is concerned... so you're prolly better off just swapping motors anyway, right? If only I had the $$... but I'm a college student who's perpetually broke so I'm stuck with this waste of cast iron and aluminum you and I call the 3sfe. Oh well... the whole turbo from the diesel thing was just a thought anyway. Here's another idea- How about a 2jzgte!!! I was KIDDING!!!!

If you get bigger injectors with a fuel pressure regulator and a 3sgte 2 bar map sensor along with a fuel pump from an N/A Supra, you'll be good to go as far as controling fuel. Up to a point at least. For compression, a copper 3sgte head gasket that is thicker than stock will bring your CR down to around 8.7:1, which is ok for intercooled boost. After that its a matter of getting the turbo manifold and turbo from a 3sgte, modifying your oil pan for an oil line and then running custom piping for the charge pipes and exhaust.
