Crackling Sound (Flexpipe?) After Engine Shut Off

Hello,

My wife's '92 Camry XLE is a bit noisy after the engine is shut off. Something is crackling more than usual on the underside, and I'm not quite sure what it is. Granted, vehicles often crackle and make a bit of noise as parts cool off, but this has gotten rather noisy. There's nothing burning so it's not oil dripping on anything.

Any ideas? Perhaps there's something common that happens on these.

Thanks,

mnwolftrack

That sound is usually caused by the exhaust system contracting as it cools.

It's the catalytic converter, and it is normal.

Yes, I understand that a certain degree of noise is normal. I guess my point is it has gotten MUCH more noticable lately. You can hear it standing 50ft away from the car. It doesn't seem like cat is clogged as I haven't had any loss of power and there's no rotten egg smell, but something somewhere has changed.... It's loud enough to sound like someone is pitching rocks at the car. It's a bit hard to gauge this type of an issue, but I would say in my '90 4Runner and '85 pickup I pretty much have to be standing right next to the vehicle to hear any noises from cooling/contracting. But the Camry you can be quite a ways away and a passerby would likely comment "your car is making noise."

This is not unusual, it`s just a thing that happens when the exhaust manifold
i cooling down, catalyst converter or not. I can hear that sound far away
when my car is cooling down. if you live in a cold area the noise will be louder
as the metal is cooling down faster.

Next time someone tells you that your car is making noise, look shocked and slowly turn towards the car, then turn around and tackle the person to the ground, yelling "It's gonna blow!"

Or, maybe don't. But it'd still be amusing to see.

Get under your car and look around! You might have picked up something and it's stuck by the exhaust and burning up. You may have a crack in a pipe?

Warm it up the go up on ramps or jack it up and look and listen.

Hahaha that would work really nice until you burned yourself on the cat =P
My V6 Camry does that ALL the time, no biggie, even from 10-20 ft away it crackles as the exhaust cools off.

She's going to blow!!! That would be funny.

Interesting how the rice crispies in my wife's car got a lot bigger/louder though. The loudest of the sounds only lasts for about 2 minutes, so by the time I jack up the car it would be just about finished. I asked for ramps for Christmas.... I'm so used to needing a tall jack and tall jack stands for my lifted pickup and 4Runner that I'm not quite set up for quick jacking of the Camry.

At some point I'll crawl under there when it's cool and make sure nothing is stuck and that the heat shield is tight. If I find anything, I'll report back. Maybe one of the rice crispy elves is living down there .
