2nd Generation Engine switch 1.8 to 2.5 v6

Hi all, I am considering to put a v6 engine into my 1.8 wagon (1988), and I'm wondering what has to be changed/improved in addition to the engine. Read in another post here that the gearbox would probably fit, but that the drive axle have to be changed. I'd think the brakes as well.

Anything else? How many working hours for a skilled mechanic to do a complete change? Grateful for answers.

Cheers
Roger

It can be done, but it's a big swap. When the car has the 3SFE 2.0L, you need to make a custom mount and modify the chassis on the left side near the timing belt. It is different from 4 to 6. The gearbox MAY bolt up, but theres no way it would handle the power. It would almost certainly need to be upgraded to the A540E used on the 6. Driveshafts would need to be changed. ECU and wiring loom needs to be changed to the V6 one also. Would be a good idea to change the brakes all to the V6 ones, as you'll need a bit more braking power. Theres a few other things, but thats all the main ones. Feel free to ask more specific questions.
Welcome to TN.

thanx a lot for answering and the welcome. seems like loads of work, and expensive. too.

think i'll just leave it like it is, as it's just got 100k miles on it. except for one tiny rust spot on front right wheel arch it's flawless.

money is probably better spent on a complete engine overhaul, there's a bit of blue smoke coming out at times

cheers

If its blue smoke only on startup, just replace the valve stem seals and you are good to go for another 100k miles.
