used struts

Ok, my 94 camry v6 with 98k miles needs struts. After checking prices online for new struts and mounts, the total bill comes to somewhere around $500 including labor, money I don't have right now. What are my options in buying used struts? I already scoped out couple of salvage yards for import cars but should I be looking for struts and mounts for the same model or a different model? How do I check the condition of the struts?
I just need them to last at least another 40k miles or so.

Thanks.

if your struts are leaking, then its time to change them.

i would change them between 100,000km-140,000km (62,000miles-86,000miles)

In my opinion do not buy used struts! You do not know what you are getting. Also you will still have the labor to install them as that was in your orignal price which was way high if you are just talking about the fronts. The labor portion will be a major portion of the bill.
