Runs like sh!zz!!!

Hey,

Here's the rundown so you can tell me what I screwed up:

Replaced crankshaft (had a knock)
put everything back together again.
No more knock, runs smooth when warm but runs like shiz!!
Gutless, completely!
Throwing a code 52, knock sensor signal. Sensors have 0 continuity and need to be replaced.
Can the code 52 cause the engine to be completely gutless, or did I screw up on the timing belt, or what??

Thanx for your input.

Terry.

Do you have a manual that you used when you aligned the tming belt?
or did you just put it back the way you think it was?

I followed the instructions, did it a month ago, but I'm pretty sure that I needed to have the crank @ TDC and the alignment marks on the cam gears to the top.

Probably should mention the car is a 92 Camry 3vzfe v6.

probably off a tooth on timing. check all your marks again after you change the knock sensors.

Hah!!!

Got it!!!

Got a brainwave after I posted the last time.

I took my timing light and hooked it up to #1 let the car warm up, then shot the timing marks on the crank pulley to make sure it was @ tdc, and it was, after it warmed up.

I then shot the cam pulleys, and they were (Bang on rusty9!) exactly one tooth off.

A little screwing around later, and pow! I can smoke my tires!

Here's a golden nugget in case someone searches this thread later:

http://www.yotarepair.com/Timingbeltinstructions.html

That is timing belt alignment instructions for alot of Toyota engines.

Thanks!!

Terry.

yeah sometimes they spring back when you put tension on them. they sell a cam lock tool but ive found a nicely sized 2x4 does the trick too.

Yeah, it would have been a real simple job, except for that....

Pulled the tensioner pulley off and was about to bring the belt over one notch and I heard that sound (zzzzzzzzzzik!), and I knew what happened... Valve spring tension had spun my exh cam over. So instead of just shifting it over one notch and calling it good, I had to start from scratch timing the thing..

So I redo the whole thing, and jumped in the car to start it up, and it turned over twice and sounded real funny... I was like, what now!! So I inspect it closer, and the stupid exhaust cam is off 90DEG. It must have sprung again when I had gone for a tool run!

So I did it again again, and paid a little closer attention, and got er done right.

Could have been so simple!

Terry.

Good job! I remember the first time I encountered the damned hydrolic tensioner, I dont have anything to compress it back with and it drove me crazy trying to get that bugger back in right.

^^ You can just run the 12mm bolts that hold it very slowly and evenly.
Although getting it compressed in a vise and pin it up is sweet.
