Check engine light challenge

I'm new here and need some advice about where to take my 94 Camry.
I got it off a car lot and it was good for 2 days. Then the cabling in the driver window went.
I replaced the regulator and all was well. ( I did notice there was a lot of broken glass in the door) Then the brake lights went and the engine ck light came on. I took it back and the carlot mech. fixed brake lights and reset the ck light. Said it was probably bad gas.
two days later, light is back on. I took it to toyo dealer and they can't read codes because it's too old. So I open the hood and find there is no air filter at all,. (how much damage did I do driving for a week without a filter?)
I replace that and put in new plugs (good ones) and e-tape on a ravelled Battery cable. fluids are at right levels and oil looks light brown, not too dirty.
Enging ck Lights is out. Yeah for me.
two days later check lights comes back on.
I'm wondering if I have a lemon and should make a squawk at the car lot or
just one more repair. Trying to access this. Car runs and starts great. A little white smoke on cold start but it's gone in a few minutes. Car has a mild thump on potholes and doesn't appear to be a loose muffler pipe. Car also shudders slightly on fast braking. Otherwise its the nicest car I've ever owned.

Any ideas

well u should definitly bitch at them for selling u a camry w/ no air filter. Your engine will probably be fine, but letting all that dirt, sand and particulate into the engine is not a definitly not a good thing. I would go back to the dealer and bitch about it.

shudder i would say check the warpage on the disk.

um search around i dont have it booked marked but you can check your own codes by jumping 2 pins under the hood with a paper clip! find the codes go back and bitch. also complain about their being no filter. and if they dont want to be help full report them for bad business.

What book would I find how to Jump 2 pins with a paper clip?
It would be great to find my own codes.

In a Haynes manual? (I have this one) I find it rather inadequate. I called totyota and they want almost 180.00 for thier manual...(not gonna happen)

thanks for the info.

^ Do you have a 5S-FE (4 cyl.) or 1MZ-FE (V6)?

The jumpering 2 pins trick won't work on a 1MZ-FE, you need a scanner.

^ Thats all from a Chiltons manual.

There is a full 94 Camry manual at the top of this forum in PDF format that you can download for free. It's the actual Toyota manual the dealer wanted to charge you $180 for.

I also suggest pulling the codes and then go back to that car dealer with the results and the complaint about there not being any air filter in the car. The least they can do is change the oil and filter again for you. The brake problem is probably warped front rotors as has been suggested. They need to be cut or replaced. Did you get any kind of warranty with this car?

The smoke upon start up is probably bad valve guide seals. Check to make sure all of your vacuum lines are routed to where they need to be and that they are crack free. Also check your EGR valve, O2 sensor, and PCV. At any rate, the check engine light has something to do with the emissions system on your car. Good luck.

You can go to auto zone, checker auto and get a free code scan to start. I had to spend $400+ in dealer parts to get mine to go off, bad EGR, VSV, and O2 sensor! But that was at 140k so I can't complain too much.
