I-4 Oil Pump Seal

It is time again to do the major belt change etc to my 88 I-4 camry. This time I would like to renew the oil pump seal while I'm at it.
Can the small piece that the seal is installed in be removed without going thru the long
factory manual procedure. The factory procedure involves removing the oil pan, then the front timing case. Is this all really necessary? Any help or advice sincerely appreciated. Thanks, Vic

^^ If you plan to replace the paper gasket on the oil pump itself. Then yeah it is neccecary.

But if you just plan to do the oil pump housing where the gear is. Then no.

on my '94 the oil pump housing could easily be romoved with the pan in place. Don't know about other motors, mine is the 5SFE. You need and oil-pump O-ring and the seal and thats it. Use vaseline to hold the o-ring in its groove while re-assembling the oil pump. Piece of cake.
