I truly feel for your car, but like it's been said, at least you weren't hurt.

We had a pretty crowded rutting season in the beginning this year. Drivers who take Rock Creek, the "prestine" wilderness area within the District, were warned to be on the look out for deer popping out of the nowhere.

They had drivers on all the stations, radio and tv, giving tips on avoiding moving targets. Apparently, by tyring to avoid the deer, one can sometimes make damage to the car even greater. So they were saying that if you see a deer at a close distance, just like you describe, to actually accelerate. Apparently, this make the car more likely to drive over the deer instead of creating a "fork lift" like reaction by the car that would dump the deer right onto your hood or windshield.

I've never hit a deer, but had one pretty much inches from the car, luckily, it was a one lane road and the time for the dumb thing to jump from one end to the other wasn't much.
