Can't turn my A/C off!!

I just purchased a 3.5 LE coupe V6, 117,000 miles, (pics coming soon) One problem I've noticed is the A/C on switch stays on all the time!

Has anyone else had this problem? If so is it an expensive fix? I'd like to fix it myself any tips would be appreciated.........thanks in advance........Joe

I've used the search button didn't help!

is the a/c on when your changing the setting to adjust the flow (from front to floors, or defog the front w.shield). Cus if your referring to the a/c setting being on when set to defog setting, its SUPPOSED to be on automatically and you can't turn it off.

^^^What jhbhatia said. The A/C will be on in the defrost mode to help clear the windshield. The A/C helps dehumidify the air in the car.

Nope! the A/C is on contantly. The only way to turn it off is turn the fan off! The button doesn't go in and out like the 3.5 in my signature. The button stays lighted in all modes!

have you tried pulling the button out and checking it. Maybe the switch itself is broken. Fairly easy to pull out, normally jsut need a very small blade screw driver to get behind the bezel around the switch.

You may also want to check the repair manul available in the sticky on the forum home page.

I'll apologize for the relay advice. I should have been more specific. It's most likely a defective switch but if not, some cars (in general) have a relay controlled by the switch. If so, the contacts can short (stick) and only removing and replacing the relay will fix the problem. But I don't know if yours is set up that way or not. Never had a problem with my Camry(s) A/Cs. I had that exact problem with an '89 Stanza which is why I mentioned the possibility.

^^^ you are right there are relays to control the A/C. The switch send power to them to operate. I have seen this problem once or twice wehn I was working for Toyota and if I remember right it was the switch. Plus it is easy to pull out and if he looks at eh repair manul that is stickied he may find how to test it to verify the switch or be able to come up with another area to check

Well I took the car in this morning to the mechanic I trust (so far) to have the rear pads replaced (noted on prepurchase inspection) and asked if he'd look at the A/C button.

Turns out that the car was detailed by someone the previous owner used and they applied to much, of whatever cleaner they used, and he removed the button, cleaned it and now tells me it working fine!......cool.. didn't charge me for it, even better!...I'll pick it up tonite or tomorrow and fine out for sure if this fixed it.

Thanks for the responses! TN is the best!..........Joe!

eyeball96,

Please let me know who your mechanic is and where he is located. I have relatives in Richmond. They have a 92 Camry. They live near Broad and Staples Mill.
