Here is the deal. I can't pass emissions...I was told to get a new cat conv and my hydrocarbon emissions went down but not enough to pass....could my new cat be too weak...it is pretty small...should i get a larger one to compensate? Anyone have any suggestions to what brand? Also will seafoam cut down on the emissions i am putting out.. Let me know...I need help

thanks in advance

Matt

Talk to an exhaust shop. They will know what to do. That's too specific of a question. You'll get better answers at an exhaust shop.

Yeah that should work. It's probably a faulty sensor or cat.

Another option is to set up air injection.

Back in the late 1970's there wasn't a chance in hell that Cadillac or Lincoln could pass any of the emissions with 500 & 460 cubic inch V8's, so to "reduce emissions" they injected air into the exhaust. The idea is that if you have 500ppm of something, and you double the amount of fresh air, it goes down to 250ppm. It was a weasely way around it, but it worked.

You could put in an air injection setup and stick it to em.

I have a 1973 Triumph GT6 with a 2.0L S6 and it couldn't meet an emission standard for the life of it. It still got the 20 & 28mpg it did in 1973(now its about 18 and 26 after mods), but the engine was never emissions friendly, and the exhaust robbed so much power, my dad and I custom built a stainless steel exhaust for it. Right after that we dynoed it at my cousin's work (perf shop) and it went from 79RWHP to 105RWHP. We then proceeded to ditch the crummy little 150CFM carbs for three Jaguar XKE 200CFM carbs, effectively doubling the intake. Then we advanced the timing and lightened it by 40lbs(No Spare Tire) . Dynoed now at 148RWHP!

Exactly what failed? Hydrocarbons or NOX? In the first case you might evaluate the ignition components. In the second consider the EGR valve. Do you have any driveability issues?

Hydrocarbons is "unburned fuel"...i agree with DFBonnett vbmenu_register("postmenu_1043282", true); , let them look at the ignition components. The cat might get it through the test for now, but the HC will just eat the cat up then you sit with the same problem next year .

Matt,

Since the hydrocarbon level relates to unburned fuel, maybe you need to change your O2 sensor.

Even though you don't get a CEL, a faulty O2 giving bad readings will make the ECU dump more fuel.

I had this same problem when I first got my Gen2 V6 and was doing the maintenance for the first time.

I never got a CEL, but my O2 was still faulty; resulting in a burned out cat and my car running rich.

Hope this helps.

You can pick up generic Bosch o2's for like $35. I had one, worked fine for me.

I have the Bosch OEM type in my daily driver I4.

Matt, be sure you reset the ECU after you change it so it can get new readings...
