Car stalls while on the move...

Well, just today, while I was on the gon-ramp to get onto the highway, my car basically stalled.
It was going fine, then as I pressed the gas, the revs went down, and then the oil light flashed, the cell light, and the battery light as well, and the engine stalled- no stutter no nothing, just suddenly off

so I shifted into neutral, cranked, and the car started right back up


this is kind of the second time that it's happened, but the first time it was while I was on the highway going about 150/160-ish, and then there I lost power and the car seemed like it was about to stall, so I floored it, and then the engine kicked back in

both occasions, stereo system went on fine, no lights flicker or dim, so I'm sure it's not an electrical thing...


I'm thinking possibly vacuum leak, but it'd have to be a huge one for the car to actually stall, maybe a maf problem- but doubtful, or else the car wouldn't just start right back up


so I'm thinking most likely it's the fuel pump.
anybody have any other ideas?

and how do you check to see if your fuelpump is working 100% of the time or not without putting in a new one and then waiting to see if the car will stall again?

Oh my v6 did the same thing 2 times, just stalls, i don't even notice how it stalls, then it takes a good 2 sec to start. Looks like a fuel was cut off and it takes some time to restore the pressure. Fuel pump problem?

King, if you have a rgular mechanic, have them check out the pressure for the fuel pump, it might be the pump itself (doubtful) or the fuel filter (probable), pump is hella easy to change for you...I have too much junk in the way to do mine again with any ease...

my brothers supra is doing that too, and he is still not sure what's causing it. it might be the ECU or the throttle pedal....maybe loose cables?

thanks guys, at least my suspicions weren't too far off.....I'm going to take a look at the pump/filter soon and then decide, and maybe bring it in to my mechanic to get the fuel pressure checked

is there any way I can do it at home? can I buy a gauge myself?



I've done a good bit of mechanical work on my car myself, but I've never touched the fuel system yet

and I doubt it would be either that,......at first, before it actually stalled the second time, the first time I thought my tranny was slipping until I realized that my revs went down too...was worried for a bit tho

The logical approach and general rule of thumb is...

• Check fuel line
• fuel filter
• fuel pump
• If all above is good, check injectors.

As a matter of fact, before checking the fuel injectors, you might want to check the distributor cables because if you swapped to performance spark plugs without upgrading to a distributor cap with heavier grade cables, I guaranty you performance spark plugs will snap standard oem distributor cables. When that happens, fewer pistons will have combustion and stalling becomes more frequent.

Okay it is not a vacum leak! Any leak that large and the car would hardly run.
Probably not a fuel filter as that would not be all of a sudden and intermittent.
Not injectors because they would not all fail at the same time!

I would look at an ignition problem or possible fuel pump(doubtful).
