...some sort of starter problem (will play with the solenoid first). If this is not a simple fix, this may be the last straw for this car. The only redeeming factor about it is that it is reliable, and once that is gone, it is utterly and totally worthless to me.
I may have to check out a 06' WRX, or even a tC (yeah, $10k price difference!)
Sorry for the negative post, just a bit annoyed.

Are you hearing 1 click when you try to start the car? If that's the case, do a search on this forum for "starter contacts". This is a known problem with Toyota starters.
The starter motor will spin vigerously - but it is NOT making contact with the flywheel - the tach does nothing. The sound is kinda wierd, not that linear.
Whatever is happening, it looks like the starter is spinning, but not contacting the flywheel.

Is it more of a grinding sound when you try to start the car? If so it sounds like the teeth on the flywheel may have been chewed off. That is surprising on that new of a car though. I used to have to replace them on Gen2's and high mileage Gen3's all the time when I was working for Toyota. You can try taking the starter out and rotating the engine to look at the teeth on the flywheel, or if you have some kind of access plate you can pull off the trans where it meets the engine you can pull it there and do the same thing. As for cost the flywheel is 200.00 dollars or so I think and then the labor is basically what it would cost to do a clutch on the car. Well the flywheel may be a little more than that it has been a while wince I did one and most of the tiem they wer automatics.

How the hell would the teeth on the flywheel get chewed off? Seems like that would be something that would develop over time (intermittant problem).
Egh, if I need a new flywheel, I am going to have to think long and hard about the future of the car. I can afford it, no problem at all, but the car is 9 years old, and if this is the start of many new problems, well, I don't know...

The starter will have to come out first. Normally it is the contacts that go bad but in your case there may be something else preventing the solenoid plunger from engaging. It might be rust, a burr, or something else. If you're not in the mood to mess with it, you might just get a quality rebuilt unit from the dealer or possibly NAPA.
