3rd Generation tranny problems

well going to work today i was going on the highway and normally at 70mph my rpms would be at 2500 - 2600 im going to say but today i was way over and it was more at like 3500 or so it was quite chilly out there also, so i acreditted it to that, i then rememberd that ive driven in colder weather and it was all fine and dandy so i switched off my over drive and watched the rpms shoot up and then switched it back on to make sure that my over drive was still working and it then settled out to my normal rpm's.

coming home today i had the same problem and when i did the over drive thing and turned it back on it just stayed at the same high rpm and didnt go back to normal so this has got me wondering wTf is up whit my car, im thinking its either one of my shift solenoids is stuck or something else is messed up in the tranny cause its all i can think of that would be wrong with it.

if it is a shift solenoid how hard are they to change? do i have to remove the tranny? i know that you can see them from the pan. any help would be appreciated im gonna go check my fluid levels right now and see if thats dead on if not ill add some let her warm up and take her for a spin and hope for the best.

yes i know that i cannot formulate a paragraph or a sentence properly so leave me alone.

BTW the car is a 96 i4 with 169K on the clock and i just did the tranny gasket and the fluid in like september while it was still nice out side

thanks
Mike

oil temperature sensor in the tranny could be one thing. coolant temp sensor would do it too. Keep it from going in overdrive..

I work with automatic transmissions. Please, don't try to change a shift selenoid. If you had a problem with a selenoid, considering you have a electronic AT (not even sure), you would have a check engine light. Get a scanner, plug it in. Go read what your tranny/engine sensors have to say, and compare it to what the repair manual says.

The overdrive is your last gear.

The only thing that happens after that, that will lower your rpms at cruise speed, is the engagement of the torque converter clutch. Because a torque converter has a 8-10 percent loss of transmission at cruise speed. This torque converter clutch locks up the torque converter, making it a 1 to 1 ratio. When this engages, you see your rpm drop, even though the transmission didnt shift a gear.

Don't have my manual with me but I know you may not get a check light with a bad shift solenoid. There are diagnostic plugs where you can get the code tho. One should be passenger side near firewall engine compartment (rectangle) and one in cabin under dash left of wheel (round). You short two pins together (TE1 and E1) with ign on (not start) and the O/D sw on. Code will blink on O/D dash lite. #1 and #2 solenoids are easy to change after dropping pan cover. Believe there is a third for lock-up somewhere. There's a sticky with the manual on the forum. (92-96 gen3 by bluemeanie) Good luck.

yeah ive gotten the shift solenoid trouble code before but filter and flush cured that problem my old fluid was stanky, just checked the fluid and its right up there where its supposed to be when its hot, smelled a little burnt tho, gonn look for the prices of the solenoids and change them any way it shouldnt hurt any thing says my mechanic so yeah, there will be a write up and pictues when its all done

im also changeing my thermostat on thursday i was getting no heat at all tonight on my 2 hour cruise round the citythe rad was freezing cold so was the lower and upper rad hose, the over flow was filled the temp guage was bout 1/4 the way up and i could take the cap off and there was no over flow at all nor steam while the car was hot so yeah thermo is bad gots to take care of that.

Ekim,

A thermostat that is stuck open could be the reason your tranny will not go into O/D. The tranny has to think the engine is warm before it will go into O/D.

Ahh, why didn't you tell us your car wasn't heating up. 90% chances your problem is right there.

I was saying maybe the coolant temp sensor was defective, well its not, its your coolant that's not hot enough, for real.

Change your thermostat and let us know how it goes!
