Just got a good deal on a new radiator

I thought some of you might be interested in this. I, like most, have just gotten a long crack along the top of my radiator (95 camry). I just purchased a new one from www.radiatorexpress.com using the coupon code "cornell" to get $20 off. The total came to $80 with a lifetime warranty. The cheapest ebay one I saw was around $68 with no warranty.

I noticed that there was an all-metal copper-brass version for $10 more. I stuck with the stock plastic/aluminum. Has there ever been a discussion on which one to buy. Obviously the all-metal would not crack like the plastic, but are there any other benefits (or draw-backs)?

Anyway, just thought I would share what I thought was a good deal.

Just remeber that lifetime warranty and how much it was worth to you when it goes bad in a year and you have to replace it again and again and again.

Staying with the plastic and al rad is a good idea. Copper core rads should offer better heat disappation.

Copper brass type rads introduce a different metal into the cooling system and you already have Cast iron, steel and aluminum. This will speed up the rate of corrosion with the least stable metals, such as aluminum.

With that said, you have to carefully test your coolant's anti corrosion ability more often.

Do a quick PH test and check the voltage (galvanic) by taking a multimeter, (-) end to the battery and (+) probe in the cool coolant, not touching any metal when you do an oil change.

Since it is a new install, you should check with new coolant (with whatever climate mix, eg 50/50, 60w/40coolant) mix.
If you read about +0.1 volts DC or lower, then your coolant is doing good. If you read +0.3 or +0.4 volts DC or more, time to change the coolant.

Thanks for the info. I will do what you said.

The coupon does not appear to have an expiration date. I found it in a post on another forum that was dated 2002!

Enjoy!

Japan

You are lucky. I just replaced the rad on my 95 Avalon. The price from the Toyota parts depot was $500.
You can't buy parts from a dealer here. You have to go to the Toyota parts store. That's where the dealers and repair shops get their parts. Maybe they will sell to you if you bully them enough. There are no aftermarket parts stores in Japan.
Luckily, I found an internet rad shop that sells on the Yahoo auction. It was "only" $250.
