broken CV joint and wheel hop

hey guys i was wondering is it ok to drive with a broken CV joint or should it be changed right away? the car still drives fine and all except for a clicking sound.

do you lose some power if you have a broken CV joint?

i know it has something to do with drive while turning but what exactly does a cvjoint do?

also would a broken CV joint cause wheel hopping when peeling out or do i need new struts or sumthing?

how much does a CV joint cost for a V6, and is the labour hard?

thanks yo!

If you hear clicks while accellerating around a corner, its most likely your CV joint. Get it replaced as soon as you can. It should cost about $200 or less total at a shop. The labor isn't too much.

A CV joint is a more advanced universal (U) joint. Instead of the velocity changing as the shaft spins (what happens with a bent U joint) the velocity stays constant. Look it up on howstuffworks.com. I think they have an article on it there.

yea i had to replace mine a while back- they said it needed to be fixed as soon as possible... i dont know what could go wrong if you keep driving on it... but i guess it obviously aint too good to do it.

inside the CV joint, theres lots of needle bearings in it, if its clicking the possibility is few of those needles are gone.

how would driving break anything other than the already broken CV?

still is this what causes wheel hopping?

defination that i found in my school notes.
Clicking or snapping noise heard when turning curves and corners.
Possible cause: Worn or damaged outer CV joint, or bent axle.
Corrective remedy: Worn parts are clicking and noisy as loading and unloading on CV joint takes place. Irregular rotation of the axle shaft causing a snapping, clicking noise.

this is only for FWD...

you should repair it as soon as possible cause worn parts or vibration can effect other parts on your vehicle. (i.e. transmission, steering, tire wear, etc etc.)
especially CVjoint on any car is very important cause it can fail at any time and you'll end up paying for towing + repair.

hope that help you change your mind of repairing it  [/i]

like when your tires loose traction and start to hop instead of peeling smoothly.

think of it as like having a square tire... feels like that.
