High Beams and Turn Signal Lever

I'm new to this forum, and I tried to search for this problem, but I couldn't find the right words to use.

Just got a 2002 SE and my wife is thrilled. Have been a one car family with a 1991 DX for the past 12 years so this is a bit of an upgrade.

Have a couple of problems though.

First is the bright lights. When I use the turn signal with the low beams on - not with daytime running lights, the bright beams will occasionally kick on. I then click the lever either forward or backward to switch them off. It's not too big of a problem, but I keep flicking people the brights when I don't want to! Any advice for this Toyota lover who's a little weak on the car-fixing?

More than likely it is jsut the way you are hitting the stalk when you turn the signal on. I do this also on my Sienna and my Camry. The switch for the brights is not very hard to actuate when you turn the blinker on. Especially if youa re turning on the right blinker. JUst the way your hand is positioned and you are pushing up on the stalk it jsut so happens that you also push the stalk forward to activate the high beams.

I am assuming this is what you are doing. have you ever paid much attention to it to make sure this is not what is happening. I seriously doubt the swith is bad and only turning he high beams on when you turn the right signal on.

wish it was that easy

Thanks for the thought, but it's not that easy I don't think. I've tried to watch how i used the lever - but it's not that.

Any other ideas? Or am I off to the dealer?

I'd say take it to the dealership just to be safe.

well the only other thing I can think of hten is the combo switch. there must be some kind of short inthe wiring where the switch plugs in or the contacts inthe switch are somehow crossed. Unfortunately if it is an internittent problem it is going to be hard to diagnose. Especially over the internet so I would say take it someone.
