Also, you usually have to wait quite some time for the fluid in the tube to drain down and not give false readings on the stick. (about 5 minutes?)

quick question about COLD reading. Does cold reading means to read the ATF level after
you start the engine and the car has not been driven for at least 5 hours or more, COLD engine... I need to add more ATF in to the tranny on my 02 Highlander, but the reading is bit confusing. When COLD here is the readind on the dipstick:
(the X shows the level on the dipstick)
<-X--|COLD|----------------------|HOT|-------------

Here is when is HOT
<---|COLD|-----------------X--------|HOT|------------

I know I have to add some more, but how much more?
Thanks.

probably only need 1/2 a quart or so. THe best way is to add a small amount then check again. Continue adding until it is to the full mark. IF you are low on tranny fluid though you should check into why it is low. Most common cause is a leaking trans pan gasket.
