Overfilled Engine Oil

I took my car to the local Toyota dealership for an oil change because they were running a $9.95 deal . I decided to check my oil 2 days later and found out they overfilled it by about half a quart, or about half an inch above the full line on the dipstick.

I was wondering if it's safe to run my car at that level until the next oil change, or should I go back and tell them to drain some of it out? I normally change the oil myself, but for that price it was hard to beat.

If you click the SEARCH button it'll bring up all types of answers to your questions. Go to . Mike Gerber explains the problem of overfilling the engine oil quite well.

1/2 quart will not hurt anything but if it makes you feel better take it back and let them drain some of it. If it was a couple of quarts over that would be a different story.

I'm with Chris on this one. A half quart overfilled shouldn't cause a problem. I'm the person who wrote the explaination chesstompowell is referring to on the other thread. I also have an early Mazda Miata that actually holds around 3-1/2 quarts of oil. For years I put in 4 quarts with no ill effects. If it will give you peace of mind, then take it back and have them drain some oil out or just drain a bit out yourself. You did say you normally do your own oil changes so you should have something to drain the excess oil in to.

problem with overfilling is the formation of foam in the engine. Too much oil and it foams up. As you guys should all know, the crankshaft isnt touching the oil. When it does, oil splashes everywhere and foams up, killing lubrication.

half a quart over? don't worry about it.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I guess I'll just leave it the way it is then if it doesn't do any harm to the engine. I have a leaky valve cover so most of that extra half quart will probably be gone in a couple of months anyways.
