so i was able to take apart the door panels off my '06. the stock front speakers have a 6X9 shape. i didn't expect too much from stock speakers, but MAN! they cones were made of paper and the magnet was the size of a ping-pong ball!
anyhoo, i want to drop my 3-way 6X9's in the door, but the magnet is too big, it hits the rolled-down window. plus, the stock speaker is in this plastic basket that raises it off the panel by 1", giving it good clearance.
i'm thinking i'd have to fabricate some sort of bracket so an aftermarket speaker can fit there, whether it be a 6X9 or 6.5". currently, Crutchfield doesnt make any adapters. what to do?
Go with 6.5" or 6.75" components because they sound better than coaxials. The only thing is that you'll need to find some place to mount the tweeters.
Do you have tweeters in the dash?
If you can fabricate your own adapters, you can do that, or contact Marv and have him make them for you. YOu can make them out of wood or MDF with a scroll saw.

it looks like i'll have to fabricate some sort of speaker brackets/adapters. i need to mount the speaker about 1" above the panel for clearance, so i'll use MDF.
i really want to use my triaxial 6X9's becuz i already have a pair and the cones have more surface area for more bass vs 6.5's or 6.75's.
the 06's have 3.5" 'tweeters' in the dash. i'm not sure if its even a real tweeter or just a cheapo paper speaker with a cone for treble.
on my 03 cam, i took those stock 6x9's in the doors and tore the speaker from the plastic housing, the took off the rough edges and used long 9" screws and screwed the new 6x9's into the plastic housing, then screwed the housing back onto the door, works perfect and the windows roll down..... thats the quickest and easiest way IMO.
But you can go with 6x9's and i suggest it, because the bass response is awsome, i fade my system to my fronts and the bass is incredible, almost subwoofer sounding, but doesnt have the same quality a subwoofer can bring.

thanks for all your help
I did have a little bit of problem with the clearance & moisture;
Problem 1:
If the bracket is too low, it will make contact with the indent in the door, where you can place your belongings. Just place the speaker braket a little higher and make sure it clears.
Problem 2:
The inside of the door has some plastic trim that makes contact with factory speaker and prevents damage being done to the speaker. I cut it off since nobody ever puts force on that area of the door.
Problem 3:
Dont be cheap and buy that spray paint that i did, but the MDF still absorbed moisture, now i must replace and remake them. Use fiber glass Resin and drench the MDF in that and you will not have to worry about moisture getting in.

has anyone tried ordering their speakers from crutchfield? when i upgraded the speakers on my old car they sent custom baffles at no additional charge. they fit just as well as the ones the stock speakers came in.
You may need some 1/2" or 1" spacers, universal ones should fit, although you would have to drill 4 holes into the sheetmetal of your door.
Alternatively, you can make spacers out of MDF that you can find at Home Depot, or use some particle board. You will need a router for this project; eitehr that, or a dremel with a multi-purpose bit, and a router attachment.

which set of new 6x9"s did you go with? can you post up the mounting depth specs of it? i'm planning to do the same but from what i read the mounting depth for the door speakers are a little tight?
i have made a bracket and did the 6x9 to 6.5 component setup conversion. the hard part was hiding the crossovers. other then that, the installation was very smooth and im very happy with my new speakers (polk audio mmc6500)
