4th Generation 4thgen Poor fuel milage

I have a 1997 camry 2.2.It is returning and average of 23 mpg. Highway it reaches 24-26mpg (best to date) and city 19mpg (was as bad as 17.5mpg) Im looking for ideas on how to improve and/or what might be wrong. Here is a list of what i have done to try and remedie;

-New timing belt set (inc. all idlers, tensioner)
-new fuel filter , gas line as well (dont ask)
-Both o2 sensors replaced, used boch oem style
-new air filter k&n drop in
-new platinum plugs wires cap about 10k ago
-transmission flush, used mobil1 synthetic ATF
-axles case drained used mobil1 ATF
-new tires,32psi alwayas checked
-i have retuned the results for fuel milage by filling it then driving half tank refilling it and checking it.I drive it like grandpa trying to squeeze milage out of it

I have always maintained the car and never had any problems till now.the car Was driven by my dad for roughly 65k miles since new,we always used mobil1 and kept up all maintenence. It now has 98,300 and he always returned near 30mpg combined driving. did almost 35mpg on highway trips. So i am lost now, i figure im near 6-10 mpg off normal. NEEd Help! any ideas?????

Are you driving manual or auto? Also it depends how you drive.

I have a 99 camry manual 4 cyl and in the city i do like ~26-28 and on highway i can get like ~30-31, in a normal week of driving from school, home, work, and misc i usually average like ~28. I kind of drive like an O'g heh. When i see a red light i go into neutral and let it ride, also i try not to accelerate too much, shift at 3k rpm, and try to drive steady.

I really haven't done too much to my car. It has like 81k miles. I've changed the spark plugs to ngk ridiums, oil is sync-blend 5-30, and took out all the junk in the trunk heh. I would clean out your trunk if you have stuff in there, cause weight is somewhat a factor. at least that's my 2 cent

have you done an engine flush?

Overall thats not terrible but not great for a 4cyl. My v6 on average gets 20mpg. But i didnt try to drive like a grandpa. I think i pulled off 30mpg once or twice. Its hard driving to get that sort of mileage.

You know some tires take more psi than others. My kumhos actually do say use 32psi but its max is 44. Filling with just 32 makes them flat in the front. Im literaloy touching the sidewalls. SO i put it up to 40 and now its good. Depending on your tires etc...you could add some more psi. You'll feel a handling change too.

If you run the fan's and a/c you will be using gas too.

Try getting your fuel injectors cleaned also. Great improvement in mileage when I had mine done.I average about 35-38 on highway and 30-33 in city. I have a 99 5SFE A/T. I also run SEAFOAM through the gas tank every 5 tank refills, and run it through brake booster vacuum hose every other month. Oh, and I have 99,750 miles on it.

A bad thermostat or Engine coolant sensor for the computer can cause poor mileage.

Winter fuel with alcohol gets poorer milage. Traffic jam kills milage

Do you have a remote starter? you may hit the button accidently.

Are you in a habit to Idle the car to warm it up?

Have you checked your CV joint boots?

For me i have the same issues. But i got A sub and winter tires on. i've actually found myself saving gas using 91 octane. And like you I drive on the highway 90% of the time. Some tips may be adding 2lbs or more air. check the tread of the tire. stuff like that and drive under 120km/h around 70mph?

yeah thats normal. You know that whole tire thing does make a difference. Try pumping your tires 2psi below the max. Do this while the tire is still cool and hasnt really been run.
