4th Generation help weird problem

i drive a 99 camry ce automatic....

today while driving, i suddenly experienced power loss.... the motor was turning, and everything sounded ok... there was no smoke or anything weird...

specifically, while driving, i would push the gas and my motor would rev up, but there was no power at the wheels...

after i came to a complete stop, i tried pushing the gas again, and nothing, my engine would just rev higher, it was almost as if the car was in park or neutral...

then i let the car sit for about 10 seconds with the power off, and i would start it up again, put it in drive, and the car will move, but as soon as i pass (roughly) 2500 rpm, the problem would occur again, the shift knob shows im in drive, but my car won't move forward...

any help would be greatly appreciated...

thanx

Check your trany fluid!! It might be low. If thats not it, then I would have a shop look at it. But maybe someone with more experience will check this thread out and give you more help.

are those symptoms of low tranny fluid level??

my god if that is the problem ill be so happy,

rather spend 5 dollars for some tranny fluid as opposed to a thousand dollars for a tranny...

Don't get your hopes up! While it is possible that it is low on fluid, if it was low enough to let it slip you may have done some serious damage to it. I would take it to a GOOD mechanic to have it checked out.

boo hoo hoo... alas... what can i do....

i drove her off the lot with 5 miles on the odo, and now its 181+
been cross country a dozen times, not to mention i drive her like i stole her...

and considering i haven't had any problems with her since the day i bought her, i guess the engine and wear parts are starting to go...

ill have to check the tranny fluid level... and see what happens....

any more info woud be greatly appreciated...

im definitely one of those do it yourself guys, and what really pisses me off is that i just spent about 4 hours changing the belts and water pump... then the very next f***ing day this crap starts to happen...

as for running her with low fluid levels, i was local when it first started to happen, and only limped her home a mile or so... so it should be ok...

but ill go check the fluid level right now...

Now this is a horse of a different color! Should have mentioned this in the first post! Check to make sure you did not mess anything up when you did the belts. Look for loose wires, vacum lines, etc. COuld you have bumped the shift cable and it is just popping out of gear? Check it out with a fine tooth comb.

Check your OBD codes. I would think the gen 4's still have shift solenoids. Could be one of them possibly.

ok, so yesterday after i finished the timing belt i drove to san diego and back (im in LA) approximately 4 hours straight, i drive really hard and really fast...

this morning, i had to run some errands, and i drove approximately 30 miles round trip, (my car started acting funny when i was only a mile or so away on my way back)

so i don't think it would have been a timing belt issue, otherwise it would have surfaced sooner??

regardless, i checked everything out.... everything seems to be in good order... im pretty comfortable around engines, and even more so with my camry.... but like i said, i did look over all the suggested areas...

(i let her sit for a couple of hours)

then i threw in another quart of transmission fluid and turned her over...
voila, problem fixed.... goes into drive and reverse no problem.... or so i think...
i take her around the block hit about 50 mph... not a problem....

take her on the freeway, 80 mph... handles like a champ....

last quarter of a mile to my house, uphill, she craps out after i stop at the light....

so i turn on the hazards, and repeat what i did earlier... turn off the car, wait 10 seconds, turn her over, drive 20-30 feet, repeat

as long as i kept her under 2000 rpm, she drove fine, even shifted up the gears....

any theories...

maybe a tranny leak??

ill look for a puddle under my car tomorrow then i can start tinkering around...
... joy....

so you guys can get a feel of what im working with.....
181 k miles, beat the hell up, a dozen accidents or so fender benders really.. (and yes she still drives in a straight line) ive replaced my radiator core support a couple of times, along with the radiator, also on my second or third set of front quarter panels, im on my third or fourth hood, (one flew off on the freeway, i shit you not....) second trunk, pounded out the rear quarter panels... have no idea how many front bumper covers and bumpers i have had to buy, but im pretty sure im only on my second rear bumper cover/bumper....
had to replace and repair some windows (vandals), second or third set of rotors, im on my second set of drive shafts, along with axle arms, basically the car has been torn down and rebuilt several time collectively over the last 7 years or so of me owning her...
and yes she is as multi colored as the rainbow...
in terms of hopups, i have tokikos (however you spell that) on eibachs, lowered 1.2 inches, sagged to about 1.75 (probably means my struts are blown)
custom short ram coldair intake, (fancy words for a piece of mendrel bent tubing with a hole in it for the sensor, connected directly to the airbox with a k&n stock replacement filter, painted with some high temp paint... enlarged and mutilated stock airways to act as a ram, and allow for more air)...also a custom catback exhaust (custom in the sense, i bought some mendrel bent tubing and welded it all together,) on a racing muffler, (forget the brand, emission compliant) .. also bypassed the intakes manifold coolant tubes, and some beafed up grounding wires... stereo with some subs...

im sure im missing some other minor things i have done...

ive done everything myself, the driving maintenance, crashing and repair....
(ill take some pictures of her for you guys when i get the chance..)
your typical "tuner" camry...

Did you check the transmission fluid level while the engine was idling and with it warm?

Checked my gen 4-4.5 manual and yes you should get a check engine light if there's a code. My gen 3 coded when the solenoid quit but didn't give me light.

without a check engine light, is there any way to test and check for which solenoid went out??

I checked and there was no puddle, which means no tranny leak....

which is making me feel more and more convinced that either my tranny is gone, or my torque converter is bad...(either way very expensive for the parts alone)

so, I want to check everything I can before I make that commitment... the worst thing imaginable would be for me to buy some really expensive parts spend a lot of blood sweat and tears replacing the parts, and then still have the problem...

so any more suggestions would be great...

Should be able to have autozone read your codes. Most will do it for you at no charge. To actually check the solenoids you have to drop the pan. If you decide to do so I can tell you more.
