Hey i tried doing a search but i havn't found any results so if anyone knows the right thread please help, anyways heres the question, today i was washing my car and when i just spray my front and back tires with a hose and this thick black oily i'm assuming its brake dust coming out with the water, but i heard from some people that its harmful to rinse your discs with a hose, while others say its ok, i just want to be sure, plus after i washed my brakes stopped squeaking, any help would be great thanks alot.

Its perfectly fine to spray the rotors. Those people that say that its bad probably believe that they stay nice and dry during the rain too...
The black stuff that came out is brake dust, so you're correct. The dust was probably lodged in between the brake pads and the rotor, causing them to squeak when you pressed on the brakes. Now that the dust is cleared out, no more squeak.

If they're warm, its fine. But if you're been driving around for a while and doing some hard braking, you should wait a little while for them to cool down before spraying them.

yeah... if they are really hot... wait a bit, and when you first hit them... just let a GENTLE mist of water hit them... that way there is not going to be a huge temp change which can warp the metal... a little steam is going to be seen though... unless you wait a really long time for them to cool... at least in my expirence - i dunno if that is considered "bad" but ah well
