Gen5 Lighting Help and extra wire suprise

This is a multi part question:

I have an 04 with manual HVAC controls. I popped the control panel out, but it turns out that the part that makes it green is the filter with the little people printed on it (the one that shows where the air is going). Is there a cheap way to make a new one that is clear?

On the Radio, how do I determine which side of the smd led is + and which is neg. These suckers are small BTW.

Also there was a plug behind the HVAC control panel that was not plugged into anything and one behind the Headunit. I was wondering is anyone knew what they were for. I was thinking the one behind the HVAC was for the digital controls, which would make it easy to swap out. The one behind the Headunit might be for the multi display (mpg, crusing range etc). If I could get these two panels from a junker, and the wires were already there, that would be sweet. Anyone with any insight.

Last thing is that I had to remove the HVAC controls before I started prying on the vents. I was reading on this site to just start prying, but thats not the case, the lower one interlocks with the upper one.

Thanks for the reply. I have a Gen 5, so the Radio HU has a different layout of the LEDs, I just want to know how to tell the positives from the Negatives. I saw the How to on the clock, but the piece I need is a little more comples than one clear sheet. I already read the FAQs, thats my inspiration for all the lighting changes.

Does no one know what the extra plugs are for? I can post pics of them.

Please do! I don't know if you talked about this in your 2 posts, but what color are you going to be switching to?? Sounds like a plan to me tho.

I can take better pictures if anyone wants.

I am thinking white, blue or red. If I go white, then I don't have to change the Guages. Blue and red might look a little ricy and I need to keep the car professional.

Has anyone figured out to make the a/c control knobs white?
I have an '02 LE and the a/c dials are white when the lights aren't on,
and are green when they are lit from behind. They are light from behind
by a tiny light bulb (in first pic), but the green comes from some filter
behind the dial (third pic). I want to know if anyone has found a solution
to crafting a/c controls to have white lights.

In order to determine the polarity of the smd leds, use a multimeter in parallel across one of the LEDs. Many smd's have a green end which indicates the cathode(-). Or remove one and replace with your desired color, if u orient yours right, it will light up and you will know the polarity of all the others due to some identifying mark on one end. If it does not light up, reverse your new LED.
