How bad is the boot? How long has it been busted open? If the CV joint is still okay, all you need to do is change the boot.

I would look inside the boot and smple the grease if its like mud then its bye bye time for that CV and if its black with some water then just get it cleaned regreased and a new boot put on.

If you don't know how long it's been torn, it's probly safer to just replace the whole thing, cause there could be damage that you can't see or something like that. I drove mine with a torn boot for at least a month and it never made any noise, so that doesn't mean it doesn't need replacing. Just to be on the safe side, I suggest replacing the whole axle.

What kind of noises do you hear when the CV joints go bad? The reason I ask is that I have been getting some clicking/popping noises at very slow speeds when I accelerate and when I brake. I can sometimes hear this when I am turning, as well. Once I get above 10 mph/15kph, I don't hear it, at all. I recently had some drive train upgrades done, and I'm worried the installation might have caused this. Thanks.

I'm not sure on what noise you would hear, because mine made no noise, but from other people have told me, it would make that clicking noise when going around a corner. I'd say get it checked out at a shop, or crawl under and check it out yourself.

I changed the whole CV joint @ 135000 miles. The shop where I brought it to informed me w/ that many miles, I'd need to change the whole joint instead of just the boot.

that usually means that the boot was ripped....doesn't mean the actual joint went tho....but yeah...word has it that you may as well replace the whole thing while you're at it or osmething like htat.... :-?

Make sure the mechanic knows how to replace the boots properly. When I got mine done, the bearings flipped out and the guy had to order a new shaft (or whatever it was) as he couldn't put the bearing back in.
