HELP! Replaced Window Regulator and glass stops 3/4 way up? How do I adjust the Glass
Hi,
Just replaced my power window regulator on my 94 camry's drivers side door. All went very smoothly, removed the old frayed motor installed the new motor bolted on the glass and thought I was good to go. BUT! When the window is going up it binds just over half way up, and the motor strains, it seems like the glass is tilting forward (toward the front of the car) because I can see a space at the rear of the window frame getting bigger , and if I manuall nudge the glass back to close up the space, the motor lifts the glass a bit furthur.
How do I adjust the glass? What is the problem here? The only thing I didnt do was remove the inner molding/weatherstripping when removing the glass, in fact I didnt remove the glass from inside the door at all. When I boltd the glass on the glass connector was almost all the way down. SHould I stick the glass so that it is fully closed and then raise the glass connecting frame in the rail and bolt it on when the window is all the way up???? Thanks to any who can assist and have done this before.

you may have installed the regulator onto the motor with the motor part way up or down, unless you set everything right before install, otherwise you may have to remove the regulator from the assembly again....hope not tho.

I did this in my 96 camry a couple of months ago... It really drove me crazy and I even took pictures before I did the job to make sure I did everything correct... I went the cheap way and purchased a window regulator from my local parts store and not from the dealer. If you go the cheap way, you need to put some spacers to not make the window bind... I had to install 5 washers for my window to still go up somewhat normal.. Try this and hopefully it will help... That is if you bought a non dealer part...
Take the glass out an re-position it in the track.
Move the glass up and down manually and make sure it goes all the way up.
You are right the glass is comming out of the rear channel as the window goes up and it causes the window to pivot forward and bind against the front channel, it stops right about when the bottom of the glass reaches the level of the mirror on the door, the space at the rear channel is a good .5"-1" I have to grab the top of the window and push it back into the rear channel hit the switch and it will go up about an inch at a time as I have to keep repeating this.
Not sure why it is doing this, if I hit the switch to make the window go down it follows the channels and is fine, it's when it is going up that it tilts forward. I think It may need new rubber channels but not sure. There were some tears in the channel at the mirror level. Thanks in advance for any other tips.
P.S. I replaced the entire regulator/track unit. Bought of ebay, it was exactly like the OEM part, so I don't think this is the problem since this is what made the original motor go bad as far as I know.
I would check the front channel and see any bends in the channel.
If there is. Just bend it straight again. You can also take the front channel out ( 10mm bolt ) to get a closer look. You have to take the glass out though.
IF you replaced the entire motor/regualtor assembly then it has to be something with the track I would think. I hav ereplaced multiple regualtor assemblies when working for Toyota service and never ran into that problem.
The only other thing I can think of possibly happening is you did not install one or more of hte bolts for the regualtor assembly. Or one is not tightened up as much as it should be.
Maybe you got a defective assembly also.

I double checked the torque on the mounting nuts, and this is a vrey straight forward part to replace, I didi notice that the rubber channel was pinched just below the mirror level and again adjacent to the mirror so this HAS to be the problem as this is where the glass stops going up and binds. The the new regulator assembly works fine so i know its not defective. I have to admit being a toyota service machanic must be refresahing these cars are easy to take apart and put back togther. What I think I'll try is tapping the channel with the end of a screw driver to see if it is buldged out and the screwdriver hopefully pushes it back in. It was just way to easy to remove and replace the regulator assembly to have piece of rubber bind up the operation of the glass.
Can you try putting the tip of a needlenose pliers in there at the points of the pinching and spread open rather than squeezing the handles? Some retaining ring pliers that spread rather then clamp may also work. Using either of these tools would less likely do damage to the rubber than using a screwdriver. IMHO.
I fixed the window today, the problem was the rubber channel had some tears in it and was pinching the glass as it went up causing it to bind and stop. Rather than replace the entire rubber channel I simply cut out the 4" section that was causing the binding. In addition to that the rebber channel near the mirror was loose, so I pulled off the access cover to the mirror bolts and unscrewed the bolt near the rubber molding, I pushed the rubber molding in and under the mirror mounting nut and tightened it to keep the moulding in place. Finally I sprayed lithium grease into the rubber channel to keep it nice and slippery to prevent future binding, the window works flawlessly now.
I'm actually having the exact same problem. Bout the 94 xle in february and the drivers window didn't seal properly. It would rock forward a bit when it was all the way up leaving an airgap on the rear edge of the glass. Usually if i just slightly tapped the switch it would rock down and more or less cut out the wind noise. Then that stopped working, a mechanic suggested that a new regulator/motor might fix it. I bought one on EBAY, did it myself (my first major solo project!) and it worked fine, but did the same thing as the previous window regulator.
Just found this site today, and spent an hour looking things over and I can't figure it out. IT doesn't look like the rubber is pinched, but I'm new to doing this stuff. Any other ideas? Thanks
